Dear Friends,

Q: What does sweetness sound like?
A: American Goldfinch 'flight calls'.

The goldfinches officially arrived last week. When you hear their distinct sweet peeps fill the air you realize how much you've missed them! You didn't just miss their calls but you had missed their bright colors and antics. They bob around from one coneflower to another, picking seeds out, hanging upside-down if needed, and cheeping with their mouths full.

They entertain in the air as well. They don't just fly in a straight line from point A to point B. They kinda bop and peep while they fly. You'll have to take our word for it because, unbelievably, we couldn't find any videos of their fancy flying.

So, if you can come to the garden, just stand on the boardwalk and listen and watch for goldfinches. It should put a little grin on your face.

If you can't get to the garden, we have you covered:
  • Here is a great little video of a goldfinch just chirping his brains out. He's so earnest it's absolutely adorable.
  • If you go to this page there are five audio recordings along the left side of the page, the last one is of their "flight call," the peeping they make while their flying to keep track of each other.
  • And for an interesting American Goldfinch 101, we really liked this video.

Let us know what you think!
