Fonda, NY – New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recently awarded Montgomery County, as the municipal sponsor, $64,245 in funding to help improve and maintain approximately 200 miles of snowmobile trails in Montgomery County. Each year, the Montgomery County Business Development Center assists the Mohawk Valley Snowmobile Club in securing funding from NYS Parks.

“Montgomery County is place of abundant natural beauty, which provides the ultimate playground for year-round recreational activities. Snowmobiling attracts visitors to the region and is an important quality of life component for county residents,” said Montgomery County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort. “The five snowmobile clubs in the county do a fine job of maintaining the trails for residents and visitors to enjoy during these winter months. I want to thank the club members for the countless hours of volunteer service they provide to keep the trails in our county safe, which in turn encourages visitors and residents to utilize the snowmobile trail system.”

“Growing niche markets like snowmobiling are very important for tourism in Montgomery County,” said Ken Rose, Director of the MCBDC. “Enthusiasts can ride 100 to 200 miles per day spending substantial amounts of money on fuel, food and lodging which also means sales tax revenues for the County. Daily expenditures can reach $100 per snowmobiler.” Amanda Bearcroft, Senior Planner of the MCBDC, stated that “Montgomery County is home to a great trail system for locals and tourists alike and we owe that in part to the five dedicated clubs currently within our County, the Charlton Snowmobile Club, Forest Preserve Users Inc., Frontier Sno-Riders, Ful-Mont Snow Travelers Inc., and the Town of Florida Snowmobile Club.”

There are over 10,500 miles in the Statewide Snowmobile Trail System traversing 53 counties, and maintained by over 250 clubs. This vast trail network is comprised of lands under the jurisdiction of OPRHP, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), NYS Canal Corporation, national forest land, local governments and many private landowners who have increasingly opened their properties to snowmobiling with insurance coverage provided by the state snowmobile program. Registration fees paid by snowmobilers provide the funding to perpetuate the system of trails thereby requiring no use of taxpayer funds.
