Streets In The Sky is a series of photos taken by photographer Richard Davis, back in the late 1980's/early 90's, whilst he was living in Manchester's notorious inner-city district Hulme.  At the time it was built in the 1970's, Hulme became one of the biggest housing estates in Europe, with 4 huge crescent shaped Housing Blocks at it's heart. However by the mid 1990's everything was demolished. Richard's Photos are an important reminder of how Hulme looked prior to the bulldozers moving in. Richard Davis is a British Social Documentary and Portrait Photographer based in the North West. In the last few years Richard has had work exhibited by the British Culture Archive in London, Manchester & Berlin, as well as having work published by renowned Photography Publishers Cafe Royal Books.

Flats in Morecambe
“On the opening night of my exhibition, Streets in the Sky, I'll explain how I came to squat in the notorious district of Hulme in Manchester during the 1980's and how I converted my living space into a Photographic Studio and Darkroom. What followed was an unforgettable intense period of creative freedom which led to a desire to document, via photography, my surroundings in the Brutalist inspired environment that was Hulme.

"Along the way I also took a series of portraits in my flat of the many talented individuals that emerged from the arts scene which dominated in the City of Manchester during this time including Steve Coogan, Caroline Ahearne, Lemn Sissay, Henry Normal, Jon Ronson & John Thompson. I have used the inspiration from that time to develop a similar approach to a series of images taken in Morecambe” Richard Davis.

Addmission is free, but please book to let us know how many to expect.

"Living in West coast I take inspiration for the pictures I make from the surrounding countryside, the ever changing light, and the purple and orange sunsets of Morecambe Bay. I wet felt - using the brightly coloured fibres of merino wool, adding silk, bamboo fibre, soya bean tops and even camel down, to 'paint' a picture." Barbara Bond.

Hercules and Nemean Lion - painting by Anthony D Padgett
An intuitive response to Plato's theory of the Forms. Part of an on-going experiment in outline and colouring, drawing and painting. "My favourites are the faces with figures as features and the Greek Myth works that go back to the origins of art replacing “outlines” with “inline” skeletons.

Image detail
At the start of lockdown all those moons ago, Ginny invited local artists to choose an image of hers they were drawn to and then create a brand new piece of art with it. It was simply a way to collaborate at a time we couldn’t meet in real life. All the works are on the theme of the pandemic and they are truly awesome - such a variety.

You can pop in any time the box office is open, which at the moment is 10.30-4pm (Mon-Sat)..

The physical festival may have finished, but this was always partly planned as an online event - much of the content (including the sketchbook challenge exhibition from which Liz Edward's picture above is taken) is still available. There's an amazing mixture of art, music, poetry, story-telling, activities - much of it based on artists working with scientists.
