Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Comment

The public is invited to review and comment on the draft 2020 Outer Banks Region Hazard Mitigation plan by going to www.obx-hmp.com and providing your comments and feedback by January 31, 2020.

FEMA Flood Maps

In 2016, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released updated preliminary flood maps for all of Dare County. FEMA has now issued its letter of final map determination and the new maps will become effective on June 19, 2020.

In recognition of these changes and the challenges that the new maps present, the Town of Duck and the other municipalities in Dare County are considering the adoption of development standards that will maintain a minimum building elevation standard. These proposed standards will be reviewed and considered by the Town of Duck Planning Board and Town Council in the coming months.

Duck Trail Improvements

The Town has contracted with RPC Contracting for Duck Trail improvements from the Four Seasons intersection to Plover Drive. They have completed the majority of the trail demolition from the Four Seasons intersection to Plover Drive. The pouring of concrete is expected to begin on Tuesday, January 28. Demolition in the Four Seasons Drive intersection and directly north of the intersection is ongoing and should be formed up for concrete before the end of the week.

RPC has completed the asphalt demolition and reconstruction of 225 linear feet of concrete sidewalk just south of Station Bay Drive but still needs to grade and seed the area. The start date for this work will be published on the Town website and the e-news when it becomes available.

Board of Adjustment Vacancy

The Town is seeking applicants to fill the current vacancy on the Board of Adjustment. Interested parties should submit an application to the Town. More information about the Board of Adjustment can be found here.

To apply, please complete the application form found here. Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21.

Pest Control

Recently, we've had a few questions about rodents in Duck neighborhoods. We understand that there is often concern when rodents are seen. Both Norway and Roof Rats are present on the Outer Banks. The current best course of action is for property owners to take steps to deter rodents and to contract with a pest control service on their property.

The NC Cooperative Extension office is a great resource for information about rodents and their control. The office can be reached at 252-473-4290.

Please contact the Town office with questions at 252-255-1234.

Pedestrian Plan Phase III Update

Little or no activity is expected on specific Phase III construction as RPC focuses on completion of the trail improvements near Four Seasons.
