Dear MPS partners and friends,
The 2014-15 school year begins for students next week, but for the majority of the staff at Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS), the new year is well underway. This morning, staff members from across the school district came together with colleagues at their sites for a virtual kickoff. While sharing priorities for the school year, I also asked them for a commitment – and I’m asking you for the same thing.
To help make our vision of every child college and career ready real for our students, I am inviting staff and community members to wear college or career gear on the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 25. Be it your alma mater, your favorite college sports team or clothing that represents a career, we want our students to see their role models decked out in college and career gear.
Imagine if our students saw representations of college and career everywhere they went during their first day of school – from home to classroom, on city streets and public transit, in parks and workplaces. Our young people would see the sheer number of caring adults – teachers, school staff, parents, volunteers, community partners, business owners and so many others – who want to help them be successful in college, their careers and life.
Each of us plays an integral part in ensuring that students learn, grow and achieve their dreams. I hope you will join me in wearing college and career gear on Monday, Aug. 25, to help support students and start the school year off strong!
Bernadeia H. Johnson, Ed.D.
