What's up this week with
Believers On Mountain Bikes (BOMB)

Weekly Update

Staunton was an afterwork adventure for sure, finally got a good group shot at an overlook (picture above).  Also, for next time, we part at the lower Mason Creek lot that is just past the entrance.  Unfortunately we had a group at the upper/main lot that we never met up with... sorry!  If you have ever ridden that Mason Creek decent on a weekend, just imagine having it all to yourself and that was what last Thursday night was like... all to yourself and your buddies letting out whoops and a hollers all the way down.

This Thursday is July 4th so no night ride, but we'll try to make Bergen at 8am that morning. Bergen is a tough climb and a rowdy decent, wonder how crowded it will be with the holiday but note that we part at the upper elk meadow lot, up the hill on StageCoach road.

What is your favorite Independence Day memory?
For me (Doug) it is spending Independence Day in Clear Lake, Iowa - there is nothing like being on a lake for the 4th of July, enjoying BBQ with family, riding motorcycles around the lake, attending the small town parade, going to the 4th of July carnival in downtown Clear Lake, and celebrating the freedoms God has graced us with.  Independence Day or 4th of July is often a celebration for everything American stands for - unity, freedom, and independence.
This week we are going to mix it up a bit as thinking about freedom reminded me of Paul's words in:

1 Corinthians 9:19-23
"19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22T o the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings."
With Jesus as our ruler, we are inherently free.  Yes, we have authority, rule of law, etc.  But in reality we have one king - Jesus, which sets us free.  It unchains us (which Paul also talks about).  I'm struck by what Paul does with his freedom - he doesn't Lord it over others, rather, he becomes like others for the sake of the gospel.  He becomes like others that have not discovered the freedom given through Christ Jesus.  As a result, he builds relationships with others and becomes like them to relate and share the gospel in the hopes that some might be saved.

The greatest obstacle to the fullness of life or freedom is your own pride and quest for self independence. Only through Jesus can we be free indeed.
