Apply for Pulliam Fellowships!

As you get ready for the weekend, please consider these opportunities. The Arizona Republic/ has opened up its application process for the summer 2022 Pulliam Fellowships. Also, sign up for Pizza & Portfolios. Juniors and seniors: If you want to be a political or legislative reporter, apply for the school's Bolles Fellowship. And finally, remember that early October is the time to start prepping for the Dow Jones summer internship application test.

1. Pulliam Fellowships: The Arizona Republic (left) in Phoenix and The Indianapolis Star are recruiting students and recent grads with a talent for reporting, photojournalism, digital production or audio for summer 2022 Pulliam Fellowships. The 10-week program is paid. College juniors, seniors and graduate students enrolled in a journalism or related degree program as of Nov. 1, 2021, are eligible. Previous newspaper journalism internships and/or experience as a journalist on a college newspaper are preferred.The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2021. More info

2. Pizza & Portfolios: Please sign up now for the Oct. 7 Pizza & Portfolios and start working on your résumé and clips/reels to show to faculty and professionals from 5 to 7 p.m in Marshall 344. Students Sam Burdette, Katya Mendoza, Payton Toomey and Elvia Verdugo will talk about their summer internships; Alums Eddie Celaya (Arizona Daily Star), Mike Christy (Arizona Athletics), Ciara Encinas (KGUN-TV) and Kendra Santucci (Vail School District Communications) will give advice. Profs. Geoff Ellwand, Ruxandra Guidi, Carol Schwalbe, Kim Newton will help review your portfolios.

3. Don Bolles Legislative Reporting Fellowship in Phoenix
Christianna Silva (left) used this fellowship to help her land internships and jobs at FiveThirtyEight, NPR, Newsweek, MTV News and now Mashable. You get to cover the Arizona Legislature in spring 2022 for 12 units of credit, three of which satisfy your JOUR 490F requirement. Includes  tuition waiver or living expenses. Your work will be published on and elsewhere. Juniors, seniors preferred. Submit 1) a letter explaining your interest; 2) a résumé with three references; and 3) three samples of your best reporting and writing (published or from journalism classes). 4. Dow Jones News Fund 2022 summer paid internships: The application process is open for internships in data journalism, digital media, business reporting and multiplatform editing at 50-plus U.S. news outlets. You must apply by Nov. 5, and take a timed, online qualifying test. DJNF will host two information sessions about the application and selection process, as well as two test prep sessions. Students can sign up here to attend or to request recordings. Sophomores, juniors, seniors and grad students are eligible, including December grads. If interested, email and we can help with the prep sessions. DJNF has not determined if the paid training programs and internships will be remote, in-person or a mix. 

1. Bilingual resume and portfolio workshop: Our National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) chapter is hosting a workshop with LAist editor Brian De Los Santos on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. in Marshall 341. You also can attend via Zoom by emailing the UA NAHJ chapter.

2. Study Abroad Fair: Ends Friday. Interested in studying abroad during the summer? Prof. Kim Newton is planning on a photography class in Italy. For more info, attend the Study Abroad Fair on the mall outside the Global Center, 615 N Park Ave. Click here for the schedule. 

3. Fall Career Days (virtual): Friday, and Sept. 28-30. The University of Arizona connects students with employers. Résumé, interviewing and LinkedIn training sessions are available now. Info

• Hart Talent Management: The television news talent agency is seeking a junior or senior for a remote fall unpaid internship in editing and creating audition reels for agency clients. Prism: The BIPOC-led non-profit news outlet is building a list of freelancers for quick-turnaround news stories (remote). The site focuses on people, places and issues underreported by national media. Pay is about $360 for a 900-word story. Contact Carolyn Copeland, news editor, to apply.
