Welcome students!

This is the first Internship Listserv of fall 2021. It will be sent to your email box every Thursday. It contains everything you need to know about available internships, freelance and job opportunities, fellowships and training resources.

 
ANNOUNCEMENTS: 
  1. My name is Mike Chesnick, your new internship coordinator. I'm a J-school grad and former journalist at USA Today, the Arizona Daily Star and the former Tucson Citizen, where I was sports editor for 10 years. I also oversee community outreach for the J-school. I'm available to talk about internships and jobs Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but let me know if those times don't work for you. My office is room 323A. You can view my calendar and make appointments to see me via this link, but feel free to stop by as well.

  3. Need a mentor? Consider joining our mentorship program, where you can meet monthly via email or Zoom with media professionals and alums who’ll give you career and school advice.
  4. Want experience right now? The Arizona Daily Wildcat is hiring for the semester and has positions open for reporters, copy editors, photographers and videographers. Apply here by Sept. 6, and meet staffers at an open house on Sept. 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Wildcat newsroom, 3rd floor of the University Services Building (888 N. UPCOMING EVENTS
  1. Career & Community Expo (virtual): Sept. 9-12. 2021 National Convention, held by NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists. The expo features more than 40 exhibitors offering internships and paid positions. The cost is $25, but students can get reimbursed (email Andrés Domínguez in the J-school office). 
  2. Fall Career Days (virtual): Sept. 24, and Sept. 28-30. The University of Arizona connects students with employers. Résumé, interviewing and LinkedIn training sessions start Sept. 2. Info
  3. Pizza and Portfolios: Thursday, Oct. 7, 5 to 7 p.m. here in the Marshall building. Open to all students, regardless of year in the major. Bring your résumé, cover letter and work samples to have them reviewed one-on-one with faculty members and professionals, and hear from students who had good summer internships and/or local media professionals on what they look for in résumés. Free pizza, salad and drinks. RSVP HERE, so we know how much pizza to order!
  4. School of Journalism Fall Internship Fair: Friday, Oct. 29, here in the Marshall building. Open to all students who have completed JOUR 205 or are enrolled in 205 this semester. Interview with Tucson and statewide media recruiters seeking interns for the 2022 spring and summer semesters. A signup link will be sent out in late September.

Arizona Daily Star looking for apprenticeship candidate for fall 2021

The Arizona Daily Star and School of Journalism Apprenticeship class (JOUR 405/505) has an opening for the fall semester. Send an email of interest, your résumé and three of your best published works ASAP to instructors Jeannine Relly (jrelly@arizona.edu) and Sarah Garrecht Gassen (sgassen@tucson.com). The three-unit class runs the full semester (live online) and meets Wednesdays from 3 to 4:50 p.m. Undergrad students must have taken JOUR 306 and 208; grad students JOUR 506.

KVOA-TV Channel 4 seeks students for paid internship
KVOA-TV, the local NBC affiliate, is looking for students interested in a paid internship for the fall semester. The opportunity gives students a chance to learn about reporting, producing, digital and social media, weather and/or sports. The Bolles Legislative Reporting Fellowship 
Deadline: Monday, Oct. 4, 5 p.m. Juniors or seniors cover the Arizona Legislature full-time for12 units of credit, three of which satisfy your JOUR 490F requirement, and your tuition is covered by the fellowship. You also earn a $5,000 salary. Your work will be published on El Inde, our school media website and potentially elsewhere. Submit 1) a letter explaining your interest; 2) a résumé that includes three references; and 3) three samples of your best reporting and writing, either published or from journalism classes. DCReport.org: Interested in political reporting and analysis? Adjunct instructor Fred Brock said this non-profit news outlet, led by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston, is looking for students to write and report remotely for $300 a story. Contact Mike Chesnick if you're interested, and include your résumé and a few clips or examples of your writing.
Prism: The BIPOC-led non-profit news outlet is building a list of freelancers for quick-turnaround news stories (remote). The site focuses on people, places and issues underreported by national media. Pay is about $360 for a 900-word story. Contact Carolyn Copeland, news editor, to apply.
