Dec. 1,  2016 e-Cursor: Year-end giving; border class video; Loft film series with 'Ace in the Hole' and Fernanda Santos; Hall of Fame nominations.

As we move from the election season to the holiday season, we can reflect on the importance of accurate information to make important decisions. That’s why the University of Arizona School of Journalism is so critical in training our students to tenaciously gather information, vet it, and disseminate it clearly, accurately and ethically.

Give now to the school to help train students such as Kendal Blust (above, working for the Nogales International) to become the best journalists in the world. Make your tax-deductible donation to send students abroad for reporting assignments, learn the latest technology, and engage with professionals.

Video: Border class presents findings

Thirteen students in the school's "Reporting in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands" course compared the U.S. borders at Mexico and Canada at the Fall 2016 Student Research Symposium at Special Collections on Nov. 28.

Click here to watch the Facebook Live video.

The class, taught by Associate Professor Celeste González de Bustamante with help from Assistant Professor Michael McKisson, split the two-hour presentation into three segments:

Border economics and ideologies: Stephen Oliver, Brenna Bailey, Genesis Lara and Amanda Oien.
Living on the periphery: Emma Lawlor & Noah Silber-Coats, Mark Flores, Julia León and Karen Cruz-Orduna.
Land and identity: Erik Kolsrud, Chastity Laskey (top), Maritza Dominguez and Jennifer Hijazi.

Santos will speak after 'Ace in Hole'

Our Journalism on Screen series continues Sunday, Dec. 4, with "Ace in the Hole," followed by a Q&A with New York Times Phoenix Bureau chief Fernanda Santos.

The movie starts at 2 p.m. at The Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway.

The 1951 film, directed by Billy Wilder, is about a former big-city journalist (Kirk Douglas) who exploits a story about a man tapped in a cave to re-jump start his career.
Santos, who covers Arizona and New Mexico for the N.Y. Times, wrote the 2016 non-fiction book, "The Fire Line: The Story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and One of the Deadliest Days in American Firefighting."
