Report for America applications open Dec. 8!

Report for America is looking to place more than 100 journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. Applications will open on Wednesday, Dec. 8If you're graduating in December 2021 or May 2022, contact Earl Johnson, director of admissions. He's offering info sessions via Zoom every Thursday. RFA will schedule interviews with students in December and January. Review this FAQ to help you prepare.

Hurry! Hearst contest explanatory reporting deadline is Tuesday, Dec. 7
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, founded in 1960 and with up to $700,000 in awards, is open to mainly undergraduates. The deadline for explanatory reporting is Tuesday, Dec. 7. Email Mike Chesnick ASAP if you'd like to enter. Read the guidelines and other info. Future deadlines: Sports writing (Jan. 18), audio news & features (Jan. 18), innovative storytelling (Jan. 25), picture story series (Feb. 1), profile writing (Feb. 15), TV news (Feb. 15), digital news or enterprise (March 1), investigative reporting (March 15) and digital news or enterprise/team (April 12).

Paid opportunities for spring and summer internships in journalism, social media and video news are available — and they're mostly remote. Separate spring and summer opportunities for native Spanish-speaking students also are available. The deadline has been extended to 12/15.
• Denver Post: Summer 2022 paid internships in city reporting, features and photo. Deadline 12/10. Apply
• Reuters: Summer 2022 paid reporting internships covering business, political and general news. Most in N.Y. and D.C. bureaus; others in Chicago, Houston and San Francisco. Deadline 12/31. Apply
• Las Vegas Review-Journal: Metro and business reporting paid internships for the winter/spring term and summer. Ideal candidates are on track to graduate in 2022, have completed at least one internship or written for the Daily Wildcat, and are fluent in Spanish. Fox 10 TV Phoenix: The station is looking for at least two associate producers and at least two content creators. Email Diana Crawford Cody if you're interested.
FAPSE Journalism Program: A funded Summer 2022 fellowship program in contemporary professional ethics and ethical leadership examining the role of German and international journalists in enabling Nazi policies. Deadline 1/2/22 Apply 
• Nogales International: The paper has full-time job openings for a reporter. To apply, email Jonathan Clark, managing editor, with resume, three clips and cover letter.
• Eastern Arizona Courier and The Copper Era: The Safford, Arizona, newspapers are looking for a full-time reporter. Send resume, five clips and cover letter to Kim Smith, managing editor.
Arizona Center for Judaic Studies: Falbaum Fellow student outreach assistant. Will help in planning, executing, and staffing outreach events. 10-15 hours a week; pays $15/hour. Email Martha Castleberry to apply.

• Pima County Medical Society: The society is looking for freelance stories for its newsletter, e-Sombrero. Unpaid, but students can get clips. Topics could be about anything medically related. Contact alumna Ann Chihak Poff.
Prism: The BIPOC-led non-profit news outlet is building a list of paid freelancers (remote). The site focuses on people, places and issues underreported by national media. Contact Carolyn Copeland, news editor, to apply.
