 Balkan Folk Song Comes Alive

My new film “Butter on the Latch”
premieres today at the Maryland Film Festival in Baltimore

The traffic is bleak.
The joker card turns.
The wheels are swallowing the marbles.
Really, everything is going haywire.
I got married to filmmaking about ten years ago, and finally, there is a little growth of an offspring to show for it.  The movie has monster feet and eyes that bulge a bit at night, but it hums so sweetly from the next room – just so, just – mmm – and then, aha, here it is at your feet, and in your mouth.  Yes, it is sitting on top of you.

Made at the East European Folklife Center's folk song and dance camp in Mendocino, California, "Butter on the Latch" is based on a Balkan folk song about dragons who entwine themselves in a woman's hair and carry her off, burning the forest as they go.

Buy your girlfriend a Balkan folk-dream?
Sarah Small, who poured her guts out as the lead in “Butter on the Latch," also makes haunting, gorgeous, tonal waves as one of three women in the Bulgarian a cappella trio Black Sea Hotel.  They are raising money for their new album, and I encourage you to buy their album through their kickstarter.  Corinna, Willa and Sarah strike the most beautiful chords – constantly.  And they are all just lovely human beings.  One of their rewards is a private house concert with traditional Balkan cuisine: breakfast in bed?
A free weekend for your art
If you’ve ever wanted to scream into a bathtub, dance in a boat or just swim upstream, I encourage you to support The School of Making Thinking and win a trip up to visit!  Or just donate to support artists making art in an environment that is actually conducive to doing so. I head into a residency there in July.
Let Me Through the Trap Door to Your… Office?
After “leaving New York” and moving everything I own into storage, I am, um, still here.  And will be here off and on throughout the summer.  I’m looking for an office space in which I might be able to keep some hard drives and work quietly for a week here or there until September.  Know of anyone with an extra cubicle? tiny closet? secret trap door?  I can afford a small fee, but I will emphasize small.  Also looking for a place to lay my head in NYC July 1 - 15, if you have any leads!
