34th TELSTRA NATSIAA:
A big congratulations to our senior artist Hubert Pareroultja on being a Finalist for the 34th Telstra NATSIAA! One of 21 artists selected from the Northern Territory, we are very proud of Hubert’s entry, titled ‘Palm Valley, NT’.

Hubert’s painting is supported by Vivien Anderson Gallery and builds on the circular design made famous by the acclaimed ‘Namatjira Collection’ of skirts. It is inspired by his Western Aranda homelands in the West MacDonnell Ranges, NT.

Opening Night is on Friday the 11th of August at MAGNT (Darwin, NT) if you are in town and available to attend.

Kala mara Hubert!

 PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP:
We were also very excited to recently host acclaimed artist Tom Nicholson from Melbourne, and photographer Tony Kearney from Adelaide to help us learn about photography. We took them out on many different trips west AND east! There were roo-tails to spare, and lots of fun to be had. Have you ever heard Dolly Parton’s cover of ‘Stairway to Heaven’? Neither had Tony…. Until now!

Tony is helping us to learn about technical photographic skills including pinholes and printing, which is very interesting and tricky! Tom is helping us to think about photography and image-making, by showing us some old black and white photos that were taken on Albert and Rex’s trips during the late 1930’s. We are very excited to see them again soon, and work on a very exciting new body of work.

Thanks to Tarnanthi and the AGSA for helping us on this project, we are having a great time developing new skills! We will keep you  all posted on this very exciting project as it develops.

KWEMENTYE NAMATJIRA
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kwementye?? Nungarrayi Namatjira – little sister of Lenie Namatjira, daughter of Oscar and Desma Namatjira and granddaughter of Albert Namatjira. Her watercolour style is cheerful, full of colour and fun – a reflection of her personality that will be hugely missed at our Art Centre. She leaves behind a daughter, Benita Clements who is an emerging artist with us here at Iltja Ntjarra, and will be receiving our closest support during this difficult time. Details of the service can be obtained from the Art Centre upon request.
