AustStab CPEE Student Excellence Award 2015

AustStab and CPEE were delighted to present James Loney, Durkin Constructions with the inaugural Award for Student Excellence in Stabilisation at a ceremony at Austroad's Sydney Office.

AustStab focuses on education as a pivotal means of growing understanding of the benefits of stabilisation for the asset owner. We focus on collaborative relationships, such as the relationship with CPEE, that build and support our core technical competencies are vital for the future of the industry. This award, recognising his academic excellence, which was particularly challenging as he balanced his professional development, career and personal life - completing the course whilst working full time.

James noted that the course has provided him with skills that were quickly transferrable to his work place and attributes much of his success to the distance education format and support offered by the CPEE Unit Chair during his subject. He also that the AustStab guide was a valuable resource, which is provided free to all students studying this topic.

Stabilisation - Subgrade Stabilisation

As the autumn weather sets in it is timely to remain industry about the benefits of subgrade stabilisation. Whilst strength gains can be achieved, which can result in designers considering reducing subsequent base and sub-base level thicknesses in  accordance with Austroads or local state design methods, one of the important benefits of stabilisation can be creating working platforms which are more resilient in all weather conditions.

Wet clay subgrades may also be dried out by incorporating quicklime into the pavement. The quicklime reacts, with an exothermic reaction, the moisture in the pavement drying out the pavement more quickly than other methods. AustStab ARRB accredited contractors will be able to describe the detailed process to asset owners or contract specifiers.

Information about subgrade stabilisation is included in the  Guide which can be ordered here. For more information about the difference between quicklime and hydrated lime, click here.
