Dear Friend and Supporter,

It’s been a successful and rewarding first year for SpotlightDC. We funded projects that forced reform, and we won the Institute for Nonprofit News first-ever “Best Investigative Journalism Award!”

We have begun to make good on our mission to fill the void of vanishing investigative reporting in the DC region.

We have an ambitious slate of projects that we can bring to fruition with your continued support. Our success in the first year has convinced national foundations funding Newsmatch to match and double your donations.
Impact – Awards – Quality -- Mentoring

Thanks to your contributions SpotlightDC in its first year has delivered on all four. Journalism funded with your support has:
  • Forced reform of DC’s eviction system.
  • Recognized for investigative awards in national competitions.
  • Resulted in increased DC council oversight and shed light on an unsolved murder of a nurse in Prince Georges County.
  • Mentored young reporters in the reporting and writing skills required to produce investigative projects that directly impact public policy.
We hope you will share our excitement at SpotlightDC’s impact last year and promising path forward with a contribution that will go directly to working journalists.
Double Your Donation! Newsmatch, funded by national foundations, will match at least the first $10,000 in contributions to SpotlightDC. Please consider throwing in with us and the journalists we support with a contribution doubled by Newsmatch. With gratitude for your generosity, we can keep delivering on our mission to keep watchdog journalism alive where we live and work.
Major thanks.
Brian Kelly, Chairman: Editorial Director, US News & World Report
Margaret “Peggy” Engel: Executive Director, Alicia Patterson Foundation
Denise Rolark Barnes: Publisher, The Washington Informer
Derek Musgrove: Professor, University of Maryland Baltimore College
Terence Samuel: Managing Editor, National Public Radio

Local watchdog journalism is on life support — let’s revive it together.
