Summer greetings from The Caravan Gallery!

We've just returned from a most extraordinary residency in Lithuania where Kaunas Photo invited us to create and run a temporary museum, Savanorių Muziejus, for Flâneur - New Urban Narratives. Over  three weeks, with fantastic support from our hosts, local people and volunteers, we transformed a former sewing factory into an evolving participatory exhibition looking at Savanorių prospektas. the longest street in Kaunas. We relished the challenging of immersing ourselves in a country we'd never visited before, with a fairly incomprehensible (to us) language, to create an exhibition about a street that many consider to be little more than a thoroughfare to be hurried along on route to the airport, supermarket or to its end point in Vilnius.

Our own photographic impressions of Savanorių prospektas will be shown at Kaunas Photo Festival in the autumn. We can't wait to return and will endeavour to learn a few more Lithuanian words in the meantime.

Pride of Place Project Tour

We're still basking in the afterglow of a thoroughly enjoyable time in Preston where we met many proud Prestonians with remarkable skills. Whereas in Bradford we were surprised to stumbled upon a chihuahua breeding scene, in Preston it was all about paper folding and origami. Who knew? All will be revealed later on when our commemorative Preston Pride of Place Project publication is ready. Check out the Blog Preston post here.
We're sad to report that the Museum of Lancashire, which hosted our extra{ordinary} exhibition, is to close at the end of September due to funding cuts.

Our commemorative Sunderland Pride of Place Project  publication is now ready! It took forever to sift through all those exhibition contributions which our designers at IDprojects have turned  into a brilliant book. We can't wait to return to the land of the Mackems for a launch on 22nd June at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art. Books will be available for a very reasonable £5 and there will be pease pudding and Maxim beer. Hope you can join us.

Middlesbrough and Southampton
Next up is our Middlesbrough Pride of Place Project in partnership with Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) who will be hosting our touring show, extra{ordinary} Photographs of Britain by The Caravan Gallery. mima have secured an empty shop right in the town centre for a month long participatory Pride of Place Project created in partnership with local people.. The launch date for both is Saturday 30th July - all welcome! Check our website for full details including Middlesbrough Caravan Gallery Tour dates and Middlesbrough Photo Competition info.

Southampton is our sixth and final national tour location, in association with Solent Showcase gallery, in October and November 2016. Happily it coincides with British Art Show 8

Caravan repairs and Panasonic Lumix cameras
Recently we had to take our poor hardworking caravan to Richard and Lynn Stark at the English Caravan Company for some TLC. We then called in to see @markbaberphoto at Panasonic HQ to organise some new Lumix cameras. Our  collection now includes a GX80 and a nifty TZ100, the ultimate travel companion. Panasonic, who support us with cameras, have kindly donated a fabulous FZ 330 bridge camera worth £500 as the main prize for our Middlesbrough Photo Competition and will be sending cameras and demonstrators along to Pride of Place Project events so visitors can try them out - the cameras, that is!

Art Space Portsmouth Open Weekend  takes place on 25th - 26th June.  We'll be welcoming visitors to our studio so come and say hello if you're in the area. You'll have the chance to visit 31 studios (most tidier than ours) and enjoy a wide range of creative talent - and cake!
