To Thine Own Self Be True

We at Knox Churches SC are in a way, are an entity within very small minority.  So many clubs will profess to “Stand for Something” but if you question them closely – or multiple people within that club; you’ll get many different – and sometimes contradictory answers.

Many clubs will state an honourable tenet as their club’s ethos; others will have a “win at all costs” one.
I tend to believe that most of the clubs involved with the VCFA are in the that first group, I KNOW Knox is as I was a member of the club when it set down our VALUES and made a pledge to stick by them – and it is why you will hear our President voice those values at every opportunity – it is something we have brought upon the club and it is something we cherish; and to be honest, as past player and coach and now as Chaplain, I honestly believe I have seen the evidence of these values embed themselves in our culture and grow as season by season has passed.

But one Value I hold dear (and not because it was one I voted on) is that of integrity.  As a person I’ve had a chequered past; a little of which some know well. However, at a point in my life when I could have gone a long way off the grid I was, at the time, being forced to read Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. Dragging myself through that Elizabethan language was excruciating – especially with a teacher who felt bound to interpret and explain every ‘difficult to understand’ line in tedious length and with a capacity to bore one to tears with personal class rating of about 15/10!*
However one line struck true at the time I mentioned: my life was in the balance and this moment arrived “in God’s Time” one might say.

A major character; Polonius (an even more tedious and boring character than our teacher) was giving his son, Laertes a bit of advice before shipping off to University in Paris – most of it very sound advice indeed – though long-winded! His final words but a few were  “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day,Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

This is embodied in the Value of Integrity

I remember reading those words and recalling an old story (Here we go again)

On a time far distant, war broke out between the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. The bat, having the qualities of both decided to remain apart The birds invited him to join them; to which he replied “I am a beast – do I not look like a mouse? Later the beasts likewise attempted to lure him to their side to which he replied: “Alas, I cannot, I have wings and fly, therefore – I am a bird!”
At last a truce was declared between the two sides and the bat flew off to partake of the rejoicing. When he joined in with the birds joyously celebrating, he was driven off because, as he had told them: he “was not a bird”. Thus he tried to join in the merriment of the beasts he received the same treatment: “You told us you were a bird, leave!”
Condemned by both sides, he skulked away, never to show his face except in darkness.

This is, of course, one of the famed Fables of Aesop and its moral runs: “He winds up friendless who plays both sides against the middle”; or in short – to thine own self be true.
In the Book of Acts, Peter and John were arrested and the Supreme Court of Israel ordered them not to speak publicly about Jesus. Peter and John, however, went from the courts and obeyed God instead, knowing they would suffer the consequences. Acts 4:19 says, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you (man) rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free!” (John 8:31-32)

To Thine Own Self Be True:  or in another word Integrity!

*  BTW – I ended up having that the teacher for 3 periods a day for 2 years and he actually turned out to be an in bloke with a very dry and dusty wit. He was also one of the most honourable and understanding men I have ever met.

God  Bless
