You're so Vain: Getting Rid of Vanity Metrics
Thanks to Google Analytics, Adwords, CRM, social media, email marketing systems, and other digital tools, today’s legal marketers can measure virtually any aspect of their programs and activities.
But the troublesome truth is that many of the metrics these tools produce are neither useful nor relevant.  They are Vanity Metrics. They provide the illusion of precision and an analytical approach – but in reality, they don’t make a real difference to your marketing programs.  And they can actually be dangerous!
Here are a few warning signs of vanity metrics.
•             May make you feel good but are meaningless to your clients
•             Don’t help you advance toward business goals
•             Measure activity, rather than progress
•             Provide counts rather than insights
•             Don’t relate to the big picture of what you are trying to accomplish
•             Do not give you context to help you make decisions
•             Don’t tell you “what this means and give what to do about it
