The women of the native indigenous people of Japan called Ainu used to tattoo giant lips onto their faces as a symbol of maturity and to ward off evil spirits. When a girl reached the age of 6 or 7, the process is started by adding a small spot to the upper lip. As they grow older it is gradually extended, and once the tattooed lips are complete it is a sign that the woman has reached an age of maturity where she is ready to be wed!

Q: How should I decide what size my tattoo should be?
A: We always recommend fitting the tattoo to the area you are getting it on. You don't want to go too big or too small and have it look out of proportion. Utilize the space you have, so down the road you don't feel like you are wanting/needing to piece things together!
