Audio Entrepreneur: ‘How I Built This’ (podcasts for business)

Podcasts, digital audio or video recordings, are usually part of a themed series which can be played or downloaded to a digital device such as your smartphone or computer and are timely, convenient and usually free.  Especially relevant for entrepreneurs and business owners, podcasts offer a variety of perspectives and ideas from experts in different business fields.  Listening to how others succeeded can help you better achieve the goals you’ve set for your business.  From time to time, we’ll share some of our favorite business-oriented podcasts.

Our first recommendation is “How I Built This”, a weekly 30-60 minute podcast from NPR about “entrepreneurs, and idealists, and the stories behind the movements they built. Each episode is a narrative journey marked by triumphs, failures, serendipity and insight — told by the founders of some of the world’s best-known companies and brands. If you’ve ever built something from nothing, something you really care about — or even just dream about it — check out How I Built This hosted by Guy Raz @guyraz“.

Reece Insurance Agency awarded an Economic Revitalization Incentive grant

The Reece Insurance Agency at 1869 W. Littleton Boulevard was recently awarded a City of Littleton Economic Revitalization Incentive grant for exterior improvements to the historic property.  The building, originally built as a private residence is one of two identical ‘Denver Squares’ sitting side-by-side on Littleton Boulevard.  Building owner Marci Reece used the matching grant to add landscaping, ADA-compliant parking and sidewalk, facade upgrades and a new sign.  Sharing the building with the insurance business is Oculoplastics and Ophthalmology, which is owned by Dr. Neha Patel Sitole, a board-certified ophthalmologist with specialty training in eyelid and facial surgery.

ACC generates significant positive impact on service area economy

A third-party economic impact analysis of Colorado Community College System institutions reveals that Arapahoe Community College had an operations spending impact of $33.1 million – creating 779 jobs – in the ACC service area during the fiscal year 2015-16.  FULL DETAILS

The results of this study reinforce the degree to which ACC creates a positive net impact on the regional economy and generates a positive return on investment for students, taxpayers, and society.  Benefits created by ACC extend to far more people than just its students.  As students and employers enjoy higher earnings and increased output, society as a whole benefits from an expanded economy and a range of savings associated with the students’ improved quality of life.  In total, ACC and its students added $337.3 million (operations, construction, student spending, alumni) in income to the ACC service area economy during the analysis year, approximately equal to 0.4% of the region’s total gross regional product (GRP). The study was conducted by Emsi, a leading provider of economic impact studies and labor market data to educational institutions, workforce planners and regional developers in the U.S. and internationally.

Additional highlights from the report:

  • ACC students receive a return of $5.40 for every dollar they invest in their education
  • ACC students receive an average annual return of 16.6% for monies invested in their college education
  • State and local taxpayers realize $14.30 in benefits for every dollar allocated to support ACC operations
  • State and local taxpayers realize an average annual return of 32.5% for their support of ACC operations
