Winter Greetings from Camp Otterdale!

Even though hibernation is calling, we’re a hearty crew here at camp and continue with our work around the site and the warm thought visioning for the summer of 2019!  Otter Lake is a beautiful frozen tundra that is inviting us to explore in a much different way than we do on those hot summer days. Skating, snowshoeing, and Kite skiing are on the agenda! If you bundle up to deal with the cold, being outdoors is the place to be!

What’s new at Camp O?

Camp sessions are filling up fast!  We are so excited to see how many returning campers AND new campers have registered!  Please register soon in order to ensure you can secure a spot in the session of your choice! ** Please note that July B boys is full except for a few spots for 14 years old and for 7-8-year-old Super Starters.

Summer 2019 Themes

We are pleased to announce our Camp O themes for 2019!  Drumroll puhleeeze….
•    July A:         Hollywood Beach Party
•    July B          Super Heroes of the Galaxy
•    August A:    Pirates of the Universe
•    August B:    60’s British Invasion

The other 2 choices, “Otter’s Den” (our version of Dragon’s Den) and Farmyard Palooza will be incorporated throughout the summer so that everyone can take part in the hilarious antics!

We look forward to introducing you to them in the New Year!

Making a Difference!

The OCA (Ontario Camps Association) rolled out their annual conference last month.  It was both “life and camp” affirming for all who attended, including us!  We were joined by a few of our returning staff who took part in an excellent workshop on Diversity.  As well, we were surrounded by a whole community of enthusiastic camp people, participated in various workshops and talks on all things camp related.  Of course, there were singsongs, late night conversations, stories galore and even a full conference drumming event to start it off!

Camp Otterdale “pitched” a new program idea to the conference that promotes acts of kindness as both an individual and group activity. Our idea is to enhance the “sense of belonging” our staff and campers feel on this site. We will be rolling out the program, which we have tagged as “A-OK” (Acts of Kindness) with our Leadership team as we prepare it for its summer debut!  It was a big hit as it generated good discussions on helping, friendship, inclusion and making sure everyone feels that they matter!

We all matter!! We all have gifts to share!  Consequently, we have decided that our overarching message for the whole summer will be “Making a Difference.” We can’t wait to see what our actions will generate.

The Bridge is NO More!!

Plank by plank, window by window, shingle by shingle……. Our old office and staff hub, The Bridge has been demolished! In fact, we enjoyed a huge bonfire burning up the porch and steps!  It certainly warmed up the cold evening.  Soon, the weather will be just right to begin the building of a new “Bridge.”  It’s going to be AMAZING!

Where are They Now?

(Mudd is 3rd from the left)

The other day, we were wondering…………what’s Mudd up to?  Where is she right now?

A camper for many years, then a treasured Camp Counsellor who led the oldest female cabin group, Mudd is working on her Bachelor of Nursing at McMaster University. It is the perfect fit for Mudd, as her personality and passions led her to assisting the Camp O Nurses at our Health Centre for two summers, and teaching swimming and lifesaving down at the swim docks.  Mudd is a true “people person” who thrives surrounded by others.

When we got in touch with Mudd to “catch up,” she shared…… “I just finished my rotation in pediatric surgery and really fell in love with working with kids in the medical system. I always knew I loved working with kids, but the experience just showed that  I want to work with kids regardless of the setting. I’m doing a rotation in surgical oncology right now and also really enjoying it! Starting to look at Masters programs.”

Our medical system is in good hands with Mudd involved.  As they say in the Maritimes, we wish her, “the very best!”  See you this summer when you visit, Mudd! Don’t forget to bring your costumes!
We hope you celebrated Family Day weekend and had good times and great conversations with everyone in your family circle. Whether it's pulling out the old board games, participating in a potluck with friends, organizing a road hockey tourney, skiing down the slopes, or settling in to watch a good movie, enjoy. Time together is such a gift in this busy world of ours!

Yours in Camping,

Captain and Muskie

P.S. Mark Sunday, May 19th on your calendars to join us for our annual Spring Open House!
