Greetings Camp Otterdale Friends and Family!

With two shakes of a squirrel’s tail and a double blink of the old owl’s eyes, we find ourselves surrounded by snow and trees bare of the beautiful autumn leaves! It was a lovely autumn of giving thanks, spending time with family, hosting several camper groups, and closing Camp O up for the season.  Fall camp is different than our regular summer sessions…….smaller groups, varying ages, different focus on activities. But, it is similar in some ways too! Crafts, canoeing, climbing and campfires…..Dining Hall games, shared meals, skits and singsongs all take place as a backdrop of the memory making moments that bind a group of classmates and friends together.

Now? It’s a whole lot more quiet around here. We miss you!

Hmmmmm, I want to linger, Hmmmmmm a little longer here with you. Remember that song?

The Fall Work Crew

Captain and myself along with Schnieder, Pops, Giggles, Stryder and Koda have enjoyed some good meals together with time at the end of the day to reflect on what a great summer 2019 was!  We have had others who have joined us too, to help out while touching base.  Simba, Creed and Crusoe have rolled up their sleeves and pitched in this fall, as has Elwood. Many hands make lighter work!  And you know what is interspersed with these conversations? Planning enhancement ideas for the Summer of 2020!
First up, dates and sessions….and rolling out Registration!

Registration is now OPEN! A few thoughts and enhancements….we heard you!

SuperStarters, ages 7-8

If you were to ask our staff who have experienced the richness of their years at camp, what are their most cherished memories?  They often talk about their first days as a camper. Surrounded by new friends, enthusiastic Camp Counsellors, adjusting to living in a cabin, trying new activities, being a part of a boisterous community that sings and plays together, they thrived! First times, good times, challenging times, await our SuperStarters….all within an encouraging community of kids and youth.  Camp is a cherished lifelong experience and it can begin at age 7 or 8!

This year, we are broadening our one-week SuperStarter program.  A team of staff focused on this age group will guide and nurture every camper in their cabins to try every activity at camp, to take Polar Dips in the morning with Captain, to learn how to paddle a canoe. As well, every camper will experience an overnight “campout” on the grounds of Camp Otterdale, complete with cooking dinner over a campfire, star gazing and sharing a tent with their buddies and Counsellors.

If you have a potential SuperStarter in your family, or know of another family may be interested in sending their child this age to camp for the first time, we would love to talk to you about this program, or to provide a tour of camp anytime! Contact us via email, info@campotterdale.com or call us at 613 284-2700.

One Month at Camp Otterdale!

Many of our campers last summer of all ages exclaimed that they would like to come to camp for one month.  It’s not double the fun.  It’s not three times the fun!  It’s “to the moon and back” kind of fun! “July camp and August camp” has been added to the registration options for you to consider. We hope you will.

Leadership Skills, our Philosophical Core

Learning and developing leadership skills, starting at a young age is the underlying goal in all that we do at Camp Otterdale. It is the foundation of building personal confidence and that “I can” attitude that spurs passion, creativity, cooperation, skills integrity. Every senior camper, whether they attend a Classic Camp session or choose the One Month option will have the opportunity to learn and hone their leadership skills.

With that in mind, we encourage you to register your children as early as possible!  Here are the dates!

And there’s more! Here are a few highlights…..
The Bridge:  Our year-round brand new office and staff hub is coming together and it’s going to look fabulous! We have been focused on building the Bridge from the foundation on up.  Last week, the timber frame was added to the construction of the building and big front porch. Soon, the roof will be assembled and added!

2020 is a special year for us!  Camp Otterdale will be celebrating 65 years in operation, and Captain will be celebrating 25 years of leading and operating Camp O!  When we think of how many people have spent their summers with us over the years, it’s amazing how many stories and memories linger longer all around us!

Camp O Staff 2020

Believe it or not, we have begun assembling next summer’s team! If you have a camper who has turned 16 and is interested in applying to join our team as a Junior Leader, this is the time for them to get in touch with us!  A simple email before December 15th showing interest in applying will kickstart the process.  If they have any questions, please encourage them to contact us!

Though times at camp may seem far away, the feeling of camp never leaves you. The magic of camp thrives in the past, the present and the future…..in the hearts of many people.  This is our year to catch the joyful stories and to share camp spirit with many! So….. here’s your homework!  Encourage each other to share a camp memory with one another.  Enjoy!

Yours in camping and friendship,

Captain and Muskie
