The "Sandakan" Melbourne Cup, Upcoming Events
Dear Members & Friends of AMBC Victoria,

I trust you will have an opportunity to enjoy the Spring Racing Carnival over the course of next week.

A few days ago, I had the privilege of meeting Leslie "Bunny" Glover, a 94 year old survivor of the Sandakan POW camps during the Second World War.

Bunny told us the story of how the POWs created a Melbourne Cup race of their own in the camp to lift the morale of the troops.  The "Sandakan" Melbourne Cup was handmade from an empty bully beef tin and carved wood, and it is currently on display at the Shrine of Remembrance during the Spring Racing Carnival.

Bunny's stories of his time in captivity were grim and brutal, but the Melbourne Cup and the life-saving assistance that the POWs received from the Sabahans were some of the few happy memories that he continues to treasure.  You can listen to a recording of his presentation by clicking here.

New appointment to the Board

We are pleased to announce to appointment of Joel Backwell to our Board as an Honorary Member representing Austrade.  As many of you are aware, Joel has recently returned from Kuala Lumpur where he served as Australia's Trade Commissioner for Malaysia and Brunei.  More on his background can be found on our website (click here).
Those of you who participated in our Malaysia Day Dinner would have also heard an excellent speech where Joel reflected on his three years in Malaysia.  His stories and personal reflections encapsulate the depth and breadth of the people-to-people relationships between Australia and Malaysia, and highlights how much more we can do by building on these connections. (You can view a copy of his speech notes here).
