Confucius Institute Scholarship


The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) offers scholarships to students, scholars, and Chinese language teachers who want to earn a degree or further their studies at a university in China. The scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodations, and medical insurance, and also provide a monthly living stipend. Applicants may select to affiliate with one of 150 Chinese universities offering courses in a variety of disciplines, including Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese Language and Literature, History, Philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Music, Dance, and more. 

The application deadlines are:

April 20th (for programs commencing in July)
May 20th (for programs commencing in September)
September 20th (for programs commencing in December)
November 20th (for programs commencing in March 2020)

Hanban will review scholarship applications and announce winners three months prior to the program start date, i.e. September program scholarship winners will be notified in June, March 2020 program scholarship winners will be notified in January, etc.

Chinese Government Scholarship

The 2019 - 2020 Chinese Government Scholarship is now open for application. Online application and corresponding application documents should be submitted no later than April 1st, 2019. The agency number for the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles is 8403. Applicants from the State of Arizona, Southern California, Hawaii, New Mexico and American Pacific Islands need to apply to the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Los Angeles.


- Be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health.

- Be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for senior scholar programs.
- Be under the age of 45 and have completed at least two years of undergraduate study when applying for general scholar programs;
- Be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs;
- Be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for master’s programs;
- Be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for undergraduate programs;
