Representative Stapleton Should Resign Leadership Post
Majority Whip’s Comments Unbecoming Of The Office
Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton (D-Albuquerque) verbally unloaded on one of her Republican colleagues yesterday. According to news reports of the incident, Stapleton was shouting “Don’t mess with me,” and accusing her colleague of “carrying the Mexican’s water on the fourth floor,” in reference to Governor Martinez.
“That kind of behavior is beyond the pale and has no place in the New Mexico House of Representatives,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Monty Newman. “Representative Stapleton’s rhetoric yesterday was completely unacceptable. Not only should she apologize to the Governor and to Representative Espinoza for her outburst, she should resign her leadership post as House Majority Whip.”
“Representative Stapleton’s constituents and the people of New Mexico deserve better. The ridiculous behavior Representative Stapleton exhibited in committee is unbecoming of her office and warrants her removal from leadership. The voters should take exception to her view of civil discourse and to her bid to remain in the state house.”
