It is with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye ...
This is a hard mailout to write (for once). There's no silly questions and answers, no frivolity, only an explanation. We feel the need to just come out and say it. As of the end of this week, Recharged Radio will cease to broadcast. It's been a few years of what has been an amazing time and has grown from one show on a Friday to a whole stable full of excellent new music shows and what has really been like a family and community of like minded people.
Recharged, a non commercial radio station was run purely on love. None of us begrudged the hours we spent creating shows for our listeners. The station grew and grew and became something of an underground cult, with bands and fans alike loving the fact that here was a place for us all to converge, to celebrate musical independence, DIY, that word 'unsigned' and make it something to be proud of. We have seen some bands come, some bands go and some bands outgrow us and go on to become something far larger. We've run awards nights, three stages at the Great Escape and had our own residency night at a legendary London venue.
But as usual, all good things must come to an end.
More and more of us involved with Recharged have more and more other things encroaching on our time, and it's come to the point where we simply can't give RR the time and love it deserves. We would rather stop now rather than just leave it to fizzle away or give you a second rate version of what you have become used to.
So, Recharged Radio will be no more as of next week (keep an eye out for the last ever show). The website will remain for the foreseeable future, and the podcasts will remain in place, though we do suggest that should you want to have the catalogue of shows, that you don't leave it too long to download them. We are hoping to continue the Sound of the Suburbs magazine and word has it that The Tuesday Club have already commandeered it for their own 'Walmington-on-Sea Herald' newspaper. Quite a few of the RR presenters will continue to produce a show, in one shape or another, so keep an eye out for what they are up to, to get your fix of the best new music. So for one last time we asked our Recharged Reprobates to tell us what they wanted to say as a last goodbye:
Andy 'Scratch' - Sound of the Suburbs
Dear listeners, Vintage Viney and I would just like to say a huge, sincere thanks to all you who have tuned into or downloaded sound of the suburbs over the last year and a bit, it's been a total blast. Also to everyone who has supported, listened too, bought and download The Scratch from first hearing us on this great station. I'd also like to wish all of the team the very best of luck and thanks for all of their support to all of my bands/project and hope this can continue with my/our latest project The Tuesday Club (http://thisisthetuesdayclub.co.uk). Hope to see you again soon.
Minki - Minki's Magic Moments
I'm really going to miss doing my show. I went from being a mere guest on a Friday Forum panel to becoming part of the furniture of Recharged and the day I started my own show was so special. I will miss our family (fellow presenters, bands and listeners). I found so much new music and will continue to try and promote new bands where I can. my page will stay up, so please keep in touch on facebook.com/minkismagicmoments or over on Twitter @50ftwoman
Rodrigo - I Land Music
Recharged Radio has been one of the most exciting experiences I've done. I am very honoured to have been invited to be part of this team. I would like to thank everyone who listened, downloaded and commented the show. I thank everyone at Recharged Radio for these 3 years. And finally a big thank you to every artist who allow their music to played at our station and allowed it to be available at our podcasts for download. Thank you for your collaboration in helping us to share great independent music. If you, artists or listeners still want to keep in touch, at facebook.com/ilandmusic you will find links for other podcasts I do. From the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, muito obrigado.
Deejay Mumin - Metal Mumin
I moshed my way into Recharged Radio nearly three years ago, and have had a rocking time ever since. I have loved working with such a great bunch of people who have taught me so much about broadcast radio, the techie bits and driving but not controlling music. Keep your eyes on facebook.com/metalmumin as the Metal Mumin Radio Show will have a new home on the airwaves in no time at all. Keep those horns raised and keep on moshing. Mumin xx
'Silent' Dave Chapman - Podcast King
'Thanks to everyone for listening. It's been an amazing ride and I loved every minute'
Peter Renzullo - Close To Nowhere
I've been fortunate enough to be part of Recharged Radio since 2010, and have brought 100 episodes of Australian music that otherwise would have gone unheard outside of my home land, Perth - the most isolated city in the world. Thank you for all the support and joy you've brought me and the artists who featured on Close to Nowhere. I will look back in this time as a true milestone of my life, and will always consider it my extended family. I will be continuing the show on my own page which will be through scudleyrecords.com, and also on my fanpage www.facebook.com/closetonowhere. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
'Chef' Mike Lidskin - California Diner
Thanks so much, from the bottom of my heart, for listening to the California Diner here on Recharged Radio for over three years. While we're closing this location, I will continue to serve you the finest in indie music at Twirl Radio (www.twirlradio.com). Please continue to support the great musicians and my fellow Recharged presenters in all their future endeavours. And thanks for everything!
Alex Watson - Friday Forum's 'Ale-pedia'
Recharged has been a big part of my life since I first came down to the studio back in 2008. Over the past few years I've made some life-long friends and I'm going to miss working on RR a lot. I hope everyone can still support the shows that are continuing and also have a listen to some of the older podcasts that you may have missed. Thanks for listening, this is Recharged Al signing off.
Andy Quirk - Hits of the Near Future
Recharged Radio has been a big part of my life these past few years, both as the broadcaster of Hits of the Near Future and as a supporter of my band, Hot Beds. I'm looking forward to hearing more great shows from all the DJs even if it's no longer under to Recharged banner. Hits of the Near Future will keep bringing you the best new independently released UK music every month as well as run the now fortnightly live night, Turn Off Your Television. For more info on both head over to www.hitsofthenearfuture.com or subscribe through iTunes.
And finally, a word from Jordan, without whom this would never have happened:
Recharged Radio won't die but it will live on in weird and unusual ways. Maybe that's a loaded statement but music needs to be driven not controlled.
From Recharged Secret Bunker, thanks to all of you who made it possible, you all know who you are ...
