What we have achieved in July

  • Our biggest achievement was the fantastic news that Worcester City Council are going to start creating many more wildflower verges and grassland areas over the next five years. This is in response to our first trial verge being really beneficial to wildlife and overwhelmingly popular with residents.

  • Really good news that Worcestershire Wildlife Trust have been successful with their Greener Challenge bid for Worcester. This means that WWT will be appointing staff to work with the community to enhance nature within our city. It's something that the WEG, along with other groups, have been talking to WWT behind the scenes for quite some time.

  • Appointed a new treasurer: Alan Spencer. He's got off to a flying start. It's very good to have him on board.

  • Made lots of wildlife boxes at the Building Block.

  • Advised the Tolly Hub on how to make space for nature in their Secret Garden.

  • Met with LikeU at their very impressive Centre in Westbury Street to see how we might collaborate with enhancing nature in Worcester. It's well worth a visit.

  • Taken care of native tree saplings at Diglis Fields along with Friends of Diglis Fields.

  • Met with a great group of people at Worcester Baptist Church in Samsome Walk on how they could enhance biodiversity and connect their community more with nature. Lots of exciting plans and events ahead!

  • Taken care of newly planted native tree saplings at Perdiswell.

  • Had our first meeting as a member of Worcester Grassroots Alliance.

  • Installed an information board at Dugdale Drive native meadow native wildflower verge. Had a photo shoot and a Worcester News article published.

  • Had a night moth survey done at Old Aconbury Orchard. 130 night moths recorded, including some quite rare ones!

  • Given guided tours at many of our projects. The wildflower meadows and verges have now largely turned to seed and will be cut and collected in the near future. We saw dozens of sparrows feasting on the wildflower seeds on Dugdale Drive recently. Not possible if the verge had been constantly cut short.

  • Engaged with a variety of Worcester City Council Councillors in a variety of meetings to inform them of our work and opportunities to enhance biodiversity in our city.
