VGO staff were thrilled to once again see so many new and familiar faces at the start of the year. Our school year was kicked off with a fantastic and well-received presentation from MADD Canada. The students were interactive and the message was powerful.

The last week of September brought VGO a visitor from Careers, The Next Generations to speak to students about the trades. Students learned about a variety of trade opportunities as well as the different careers considered to be part of the trades. The school was also surprised with a visit from MLA Jessica Littlewood who stopped in for a meet and greet. This impromptu visit gave students the opportunity to tell Mrs. Littlewood about Next Step and how much of a difference the school has made in their lives.  Mrs. Littlewood was able to ask students questions about Grad, Christmas Dinner, and Remembrance Day.  Some of our students shared with Mrs. Littlewood about their experience getting on the bus before 7 am, and Mrs. Littlewood expressed her admiration of the students and their dedication to getting an education.
On October 16th, Next Step Junior/Senior High participated in the Canada-wide STUDENT VOTE initiative. This initiative takes a 'hands-on' approach at teaching students about democracy in Canada. It was great to see the amazing conversations students had during the day as they discussed their feelings and views regarding the electoral candidates; matching their values to those of the political ideologies and parties!

To see how students across Canada voted visit
Thank you to all of the student volunteers who helped make Student Vote a huge success, and a big thank-you to Joanne for her tireless support of Student Vote!!

CFCW Critters Goodwill Hockey Tour 15/16 Comes to VGO

Special Olympics Vegreville and Next Step High School Vegreville are pleased to announce their partnership to host the CFCW Critters Goodwill Hockey Tour.
The CFCW Critters Hockey team was established in the fall of 1993 and has continued to tour the province ever since. All monies raised from Critters hockey stay in each local community and have gone toward worthwhile causes such as; minor hockey, arena renovations, figure skating clubs, playschools and various other local charities.
Not only does this event give VGO students the opportunity to be involved in an amazing extra-curricular activity, it also provides VGO with a unique environment to build and strengthen relationships with new and returning students. This is also a fantastic opportunity for VGO to solidify a foundation of established partnerships as well as create new ones.
The Mighty Mavericks will be made up of community members from Vegreville, Two Hills, Fort  Saskatchewan, RCMP members, business owners and more. Students will be working side by side with Special Olympic Team members to help run this amazing event.

This exciting event will take place Thursday, November 5, 7:00 at the Vegreville Arena.  All monies raised will be used to support the Vegreville Special Olympics and the Next Step Square Foot Garden Project and Foods Program.

Upcoming Consultations on Fort Saskatchewan School Boundaries

Mark your calendars for one of two upcoming community consultations for the next phase of the boundary review process in Fort Saskatchewan.
Thursday, November 19
Wednesday, November 25
4:30-8 p.m.
Rudolph Hennig Junior High, gymnasium
9512 92 Street

Families are welcome to come at any time either evening that suits your schedule. A short presentation will take place at approximately 6 p.m. each evening. Representatives from Stantec Consulting Ltd. will review the data that has been collected and share an overview of what the data is telling us about how and where Fort Saskatchewan is evolving and growing. Attendees will have the opportunity to review the proposed options on new school boundaries for Fort Saskatchewan.
These options have been developed to determine a boundary area for the new K-9 school in Fort Saskatchewan by realigning our existing school boundaries.
We want to hear what you think about these options. Opportunities will be available to review the information, ask questions, and provide your feedback. The feedback collected will be used to review and refine the options. One final round of community consultation will take place before the recommended boundaries go to the Board of Trustees for approval in early 2016.
We encourage you to be part of these discussions. Please join us.

Budding Poet

Home Education student, Mikala Cutler, was given the challenge of composing a three verse poem comparing the ocean to something she felt it reminded her of.  Thank you Mikala for sharing your budding talent with us!
The Blue, Blue Jay Sea
by Mikala Cutler

The sea is a mischievous blue jay,
it can play tricks on you all the time.
They can be beautiful and glossy,
and then change to loud and aggressive in seconds!

The bird frantically flies through the dark, windy sky

to her nest on top of the cliff,
where the ocean waves crash
against the wall of rock.

When the calm waters of the sea
gently roll up onto the shore,
it is like the mother blue jay
chirping a lullaby to her babies.

EIPS Parent Survey

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) supports parent engagement at the school and division levels. Gathering feedback from parents about the overall performance of schools and the school division is an important component of engagement. While parents of students in grades 4, 7, and 10 currently participate in the provincial Accountability Pillar Surveys, the new EIPS Parent Survey coming your way this November is designed to offer all parents an opportunity to provide their feedback. This information will help supplement our Accountability Pillar Survey data.
More information, a link to the survey, and key survey opening and closing dates will be coming your way in early November as soon as the details are finalized. We encourage you to take a few minutes to complete this survey when it arrives as this information will help inform our school and division planning.
