As we look forward to 2018, the one theme is apparent is “speed.”  In all of our endeavors, the speed of information flow, decision making, world events, politics, etc., is increasing dramatically.  From a business point of view, technology, marketplace, competition, manufacturing, etc. are all changing at breakneck speed.  This year A&SoF will focus on providing information quickly and concisely to allow you to make the optimum decisions for your process.  Finally, read often, think critically, and let’s all prosper in 2018.

Continuous Vacuum Filtration Enhances Zinc Oxide Process

To develop an optimized filtration process for a zinc oxide product, Madison Industries and BHS-Sonthofen Inc. worked together on laboratory and field pilot testing. Engineers from both firms showed creativity and “outside-the-box” thinking in looking at the process from new vantage points in their quest to find a better option than the installed batch filter press. This led to the selection of continuous vacuum filtration as the best option among BHS’s full range of equipment. The continuous filter, which was installed in 2016, provides maximum filtration efficiency and improves product quality while increasing yield and reducing operating and maintenance costs.

Continuous Vacuum Filtration Technologies for Sulfuric and Hydrochloric Acid Slurries

This article discusses the different types of vacuum filtration technologies in the market for acidic slurries and the issues involved both from a process view and a safety view. Also covered is the use of alternate materials available in the construction of vacuum belt filters to address chemical compatibility concerns in applications using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid as the liquid constituent in slurry. This article continues with a case study including laboratory testing and scale up to a production vacuum belt filter. The challenge is to process 2,200 kg/h dry solids that have been precipitated from a sulfuric acid solution.

First of its kind:  Tantaline Pocket Leaf Filter for Rental or Purchase

The BHS Pocket Leaf Filter (PLF) is used for lab testing to confirm pressure or vacuum filtration as well as to determine optimum filtration variables such as cake thickness, filter media, cake washing, drying, and solids discharge.  The PLF is available in 316 Ti stainless steel, polypropylene and Hastelloy.  BHS has now developed a Tantaline PLF for application testing with improved temperature and compatibility characteristics over polypropylene at a much lower cost than Hastelloy.  Contact BHS today for more information

Selecting the Right Type of Filtration for Solid-Liquid Separation

Filtration selection, if we think back to Sherlock Holmes, means “not jumping to conclusions.”  There is no “one size fits all” process solution.  Selecting a filtration technology requires a systems approach incorporated with other solids processing such as reactors, dryers, solids handling, etc.  You can gain an objective overview by filling out an application data sheet that can help identify what’s involved in the specific solid-liquid separation.
