This issue will focus on “Acidic Slurries and Vacuum Filtration”    

Welcome to A&SoF. A&SoF is an e-newsletter, managed by BHS, with its sole purpose to enhance the filtration knowledge of the marketplace to solve actual plant problems.

This issue focuses on the challenges of acidic slurries and vacuum filtration.  First, there is a paper by Garrett Bergquist, the BHS Process & Application Engineer, which is being presented at the AICHE annual meeting in San Francisco.  In this article, Garrett discusses belt filter technologies, materials of construction and proper vacuum belt selection.  Following this is a presentation about the laboratory filtration testing capabilities of BHS.  Finally, BHS has supplied a fully-mobile vacuum belt filter skid including vacuum pump, separators, instrumentation and PLC controls.

7 Key Steps in PetChem Safety

Attending the PetChem Technology Forum in Houston I learned from engineering, operating company, supplier and industry experts. I was fortunate enough to be presenting on Filtration Technology for Removing Solid Contaminant Fines from Water Scrubbing, Clarifier Effluent and Grey Water.  
During PetChem, there was a presentation from Robert J. Weber, the President/CEO and founder of PSRG, a global provider of process safety, risk management, process plant reliability, and comprehensive HSSE services for the hydrocarbon and chemical process industries.   He spoke about “lessons-learned” from industry incidents and presented guidelines for Key Elements of Process Safety.

This article discusses the different types of vacuum filtration technologies in the market for acidic slurries and the issues involved both from a process view and a safety view.  Also covered is the use of alternate materials available in the construction of vacuum belt filters to address chemical compatibility concerns in applications using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid as the liquid constituent in a slurry. This article continues with a case study including laboratory testing and scale up to a production vacuum belt filter.  The challenge is to process 2,200 kg/h dry solids that have been precipitated from a sulfuric acid solution.Read More.  


BHS has up-fitted a fully-functional filtration laboratory in our facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.  We are able to conduct pressure and vacuum testing as well as various analytical tests such as conductivity, total solids (dissolved and suspended), and moisture.   Slurry evaluations include slurry preparation (reaction chemistry, if necessary), cake structure, filtration, washing and drying, filter aids, etc.  Read more …


BHS has provided a Vacuum Belt Filter skid, 0.3m2, including liquid ring vacuum pump, separator, transfer pump, instrumentation and PLC controls.  The skid is easily moved within process operating suites and is fully-wired for quick electrical hook-up.  Standard sizes of skids range from 0.1 m2 to 0.6 m2 with custom units available.  Please contact BHS for further information.
