The workshops present a new concept in professional architectural learning by providing first hand access to teaching from industrial developers of manufacturing processes, fabrication experts and software developers for the Rhino and Grasshopper software platform.
A total of four workshops will run over four days, building components that perform specific functions; foundation; structure; interior and exterior façade; and the results of all four will be integrated into a single full-scale assembly.

The workshop addresses the challenge of designing panelling for freeform surfaces that can be efficiently manufactured within production parameters. The workshop addresses this problem through an integrated software and material approach. Evolute Tools, a Rhino plugin, provides the computational tools to analyse and optimise designs to take advantage of the technique of heat forming Corian strips. Through Day 1 and 2, you will develop and prototype designs, followed by generating production data. You will then attend the Cutting Edge factory on Day 3 in order to fully immerse yourself in Corian processing, before assembling the final structure on Day 4.
EvoluteTools for Rhino is an advanced plugin suite providing access to freeform surface panelization, planarization and geometry optimization. EvoluteTools workflow involves forcing the subdivided version of a user created coarse mesh to take the shape of an input surface (NURBS polysurface, TSplines surface, mesh) and then refine the result by optimizing for different constraints like planarity of faces, smoothness of seams, closeness to the input surface and many others.

Cutting Edge provides a full solid surface fabrication service to designers, architects, builders and retail outlets. A diverse range of items are fabricated with our 3- and 5-axis CNC routers. Advanced fabrication techniques include: single and double curvature thermoforming, image sublimation, hidden fixings, engraving and reverse engineering.
