Happy Holidays From Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous!
This is admittedly a festive, but also hectic time of year. Year end inventory counts have to be done (cursed accountants sure seem Scrooge-esque when both fiscal and calendar year ends approach!), the obligatory office Christmas party, and preparation efforts for the holiday family gathering are all examples of things that need to be overcome before it's actually time to relax.
This holiday season, the EBGA Executive wants to wish you and those close to you a safe and happy holiday season. As always, be sure to find safe and responsible transportation after enjoying those festive craft beers!
Here's to another year of hosting great events that focus on showcasing and learning about local craft beer! Thanks to everyone for a great 2014... we'll be looking forward to catching up with you in 2015!
Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous presents another cask ale centered event for your calendar, this time, with the premise of staving off the cold of a typically frigid time of year. We're introducing a smaller winter event to keep focus across the seasons and to continue to showcase the skill and products from some amazing local craft brewers.
Freeze Your Cask Off!
will be held on Saturday, 21 February 2015
at the Strathcona Community League Hall (10139 87 Ave), in Edmonton from 1pm - 7pm.
If you've previously attended our iterations of our EBGA Real Ale Festival, then you'll have a good idea of what we're trying to do. This time, however, we've posed a challenge to the brewers who will be creating the cask conditioned beers. Given the propensity to gravitate to darker styles, in part, to complement the few short hours of sunlight
we experience in Edmonton during the winter months, and in part because they can be of higher ABV to fight off the cold, the brewers have been challenged to create beers that also gravitate to the darker spectrum. At this point we can only speculate as to the styles they will aim for - Porter? Stout? Old Ale? Dark Belgian Strong? Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale? - who knows!
In addition to being the first winter cask ale festival put on by the EBGA, we're also proud to announce a physical embodiment of the partnership that we are developing with the Alberta Small Brewers Association. This particular embodiment happens to take the form of a special (limited) edition growler. The growler is co-funded by EBGA and ASBA, and will be a take-home gift for the patrons of Freeze Your Cask Off!
In line with all EBGA events, we are attempting to make this event both accessible and educational for all those that wish to attend. Patrons will likely have the opportunity to interact with many of the brewers that are creating the cask conditioned beers at the event.

Drink This Podcast - An Evening Of Discussion
An invitation was extended to me (Shane) many moons ago to join Mr. Matt Slingsby to speak with him to produce an episode of the podcast that he hosts - Drink This Podcast
. The podcast is Edmonton centric and focuses on discussions, with a certain bias towards craft beer.
It took a good long while for Matt and I to find common time to sit down to record the podcast. We both lead busy lives. Matt hosts and produces Drink This Podcast in a similar capacity that the EBGA works to produce events - in the after-work hours of our personal lives. His skills as an interviewer are pretty slick.
Matt and I had a great, fluid, and mostly lighthearted conversation about EBGA, beer in general, and some history thrown in for good measure. This episode is the first half(-ish) of our discussion. Give it a listen.
Prepare Ye the Way of the Cask!
Huge thanks to Matt for inviting me to speak on his podcast. It was certainly a pleasure!
The search for good beer need not be lonely.
