Last Month (October 2011....and some of November 2011)

What you missed:

Wow! What a month!  Just to offer a brief recap of the events (not just the Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous ones) that happened around the city.  Proof that it is a great time to be a beer geek!
4 Oct: Alley Kat Cask night at Next Act Pub
13 Oct: Drams & Draughts at the Winspear
16 Oct: Urban Diner Beer Dinner w/ Sherbrooke
20 Oct: Alley Kat Cask Night at SugarBowl
21 Oct: Rocky Mountain Wine & Food at the Shaw
26 Oct: Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous at Wunderbar (Beer U)
1 Nov: Alley Kat Cask Night
2 Nov: Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous w/ Phillips Brewing at Wunderbar
3 Nov: Ally Kat Big Bottle/Seasonal Launch party
....  I may have missed some, but wow!  This is great to see because it means people are getting out there to appreciate not only craft beer, and even better, getting out in the community to support their local brewers, retailers and charities.  Good on you all!

To give a quick summary of the EBGA events, the first one in a quick sucession was the next in a continuing series of events that Craig (Wunderbar) came up with:  Beer University (non-accredited).  In October's class we covered porters.  We sampled 7 different porters from all over the world, but we kept our local trend going with having one of the contract brews from Sherbrooke - the Ochsner's 1905 Alberta Porter (of Edmonton Homebrewers Patrick and Ray) brewed at Alley Kat.  We even had the opportunity to sample a surprise smoked porter: Ise Kadoya Imperial Smoked Porter (thank you Charles!).  These introductions to different beer styles will continue into the coming months....keep reading.

The other event that the Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous put on since our last newsletter was a night with the owner and brewer of Victoria, BC's Phillips Brewing, Matt Phillips!  Phillips has recently expanded into the Alberta market thanks to some added capacity and some fast acting sales reps.  We at the EBGA were amazingly lucky to have not only Matt, but also Simon (Phillips) and Steve (49th Parallel Group).  That night those who attended not only were able to sample a selection of the products available from Phillips, but also, and (I found this to be the most valuable) got to personally know the faces of the people behind the beer.  Matt told tales of the early days of Phillips where he actually lived in his brewery!  Other news of the coming ventures of Phillips was discussed, like thier comming collaboration with Garrision of Halifax, so stay tuned!  Thanks again to everyone who came out to visit the guys from Phillips and if you were one of the lucky ones to go home with a Phillips T-shirt, maybe shoot them an email thanking them for the nakedness prevention :)

This Month (more November 2011)

Where:  Wunderbar Hofbrauhaus (8120 101 street)
When:   November 29, 2011 @ 7:30pm

Class will be in session again this month.  We've had a great couple of seminars so far both with Beer 101 - a whirlwind tour through 17 different beer styles, and frankly, quite a marathon.  Beer 102 was an easier to handle 7 different porters and an introduction to the style.

This month we're going to have another single style profile.  Beer 103 is Craig's favorite style - India Pale Ales.

For our coming event on the 29th, we're going to offer you an insight to the history of the style, delving into its' roots and its' revival in the craft beer industry in the past two decades.

As with previous Beer University (non-accredited) events we're going to walk you through this history with some quintessential examples of the style.  Our lists (as with previous Beer University events) aren't finalized yet, but we're uncompromising in our search for quality craft beers to present to you.

So, come on down to learn about the history of IPA and sample a variety of the style, both new and old.

Oh, and one more thing to note about November is that this is the month of moustaches!  We had the noble idea of growing one in accordance with the Movember social movement in support and awareness of prostate cancer, but there was a lack of coordination on our part.  In lieu of not enjoying a spiffy mo, we recommend that you support the crew of mo-bros at Alley Kat who are fore-fitting their upper lips for this cause.  Drop by the brewery and give them a few dollars if you can.

And just one more thing..... November just so happens to be the 6th consecutive month of Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous!  We began this little venture in June with a special keg of the Yukon Brewing's Double Trouble IIPA.  It seems like such a short time ago.  We've been amazingly successful all thanks to the great community in Edmonton surrounding craft beer.  So, I think it's about time to say that we're going steady with all of you.  There.  I said it.  It's official.  No take-backs.  We're working on some cool things in the next six months, but we'll keep these plans a secret for now.  What this long-windedness is trying to say is Thank you!

Next Month.....(December 2011)

Sometime between Christmas and New Years.....details to follow.

In order to honour the season of giving, we're giving you an opportunity to watch a movie.  Not just any movie, but a movie about beer.  Surprising, right!?

The idea here is that we don't want to do anything too high profile for the month of December as we're all busy with family, friends, and awkward workplace celebrations.  We can always find time for a beer though.  And that's just what we intend to do.  We're offering a movie screening and will be raffling off a boat load of door prizes kindly donated to the EBGA.  This is our way to give some lucky attendees a gift or two.

We're going to use this time to say thank you to our followers, sponsors, and guests, so look for a quick recap of what the Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous has done thus far.  It's not easy to think about the holiday season being upon us already (yeas, I'm a last minute shopper), but we're going to do this event with style.  Maybe even some Wunderbar mood-lighting.

As soon as our calendars are set we'll announce the movie date via our social media feeds (both the Twittering and the Facebook).
Thanks to the sponsors of the Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous!
