It can be unnerving to take a leap of faith but as the writer Anais Nin said, "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." She was one hundred percent correct and I've experienced this in my own life. Before becoming a photographer I was slogging along in unfulfilling jobs. It offered financial security though, so I begrudgingly stayed on for many years. This was not healthy for my physical or mental well-being. Ironically, this supposed safe route was slowly killing me.

I made a plan to jump ship and used the dreaded job as a way to prepare for my next venture of being a photographer. I bought my cameras and lenses, started working part time for a newspaper, and saved a little bit of money. The day finally came when I had to choose. I could continue toiling in the traditional route, or take a pay cut and follow my dreams. Thankfully I opted for the latter and thus began a wild and fulfilling ride that continues to this day.

Is there something that you want to do that involves a risk? Try not to let the fear of change stand in your way. Remember to never be your own defeatist. You are most beautiful when you allow yourself to bloom.

Featured Tip

Beauty is hiding in plain sight, but only for those who learn to see beyond the obvious. To capture the heart of a region through your lens, you must connect with a place on a deeper level. This often involves slowing down and immersing yourself in the culture of those who call it home. By doing so, you become more than just a tourist with a camera, but a participant searching for truth and understanding. Every corner of this earth has its own unique characteristics, and the successful travel photographer exposes these differences in a way that others can relate to.
