December Newsletter

Meet December's Featured Blogger:

This month's featured blogger is Jean Perpillant who is not only a blogger but also a leading photographer and website designer. As one of the organizers of the popular WordPress Orlando Meet Up group (over 2,000 members!), we thought it would be fun to pick Jean's brain about blogging in general. (See his answers below.)

You can connect with Jean on most social media by looking for @JPDesignTheory

Jean's Take on Blogging:

1. Name one thing you really love about blogging:

My favorite thing about blogging is the ability to be myself when I write. I typically write my blogs after an experience, good or bad. The good experiences are fun and easy to talk about. The bad are examples where I either need to learn something or learned from something and want to share so that others can learn from my mistakes. The bloggers I follow are good at these practices as well, so for me that’s great value.

2. What is your blogging secret weapon?

It’s funny thinking about what would be my secret weapon when I try to share my tactics whenever I can. But my one secret blogger agent tool would be a browser extension I use called SpyBar. It allows me to see what a WordPress site is made up of. For example with this tool, it can tell me the theme, plugins, and Alexa ranking of a WordPress website. So when I come across a cool website that has a nice design or some function that makes me say “how’d they do that?!” I use this tool to find out.

3. What is your best tip for new bloggers?

For new bloggers I would say the best thing you can do is get on a schedule and routine of blogging and stick to it. We’re told we should be blogging several times a week, sharing on every social network available, comment on other blogs, and more. But really all of that is fluff. Your content is what is really important no matter how frequent you decide to be with it. Now I will say be consistent with your posts. Allow your growing readers to expect when you’ll be posting new content and try and always use visuals to aid your posts. These days attention spans are shrinking faster and faster, so get to your point early, use some descriptive graphics, and formulate a style.
