Message from President Diana

Happy November everyone!

I am happy to report as of press time, we officially have a See’s Candy Store!  Thank you to Marie Wood for finding our spot, I am sure Lynne and Sarah appreciate your arm twisting!  Their committee is working fast to get everything secured for the store.  You will be updated shortly with what is needed.  This is one of our major fundraisers, so it will be all hands-on deck to help with set up, staffing, clean up, etc.

Hope to see you all at our next program and business meetings.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Diana

November Program Meeting Speaker

Our speaker will be a representative from Project R.I.D.E.

Project R.I.D.E., Inc. provides recreational therapeutic horseback riding instruction to people with special needs. Utilizing gentle equines and specially trained volunteers, they construct a safe and enjoyable experience that is therapeutic in its benefits, educational in its design and recreational at its heart.

Join us to learn more about this local non-profit on Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 at the Elk Grove Presbyterian Church (8153 Elk Grove Blvd. #50, on the corner of Elk Grove Blvd. and Big Horn, near the Chevron station) during our Program Meeting!

The Mission
As a member of Soroptimist International of Elk Grove, you may be asked what our club is all about. Instead of trying to explain that we're a service organization like (fill in the blank)...say this: "Our mission is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment."

Both of our Dream programs (Live Your Dream & Dream It Be It) directly support this mission. Our other programs (Helping Hands, crisis kits, community grants) also support this mission directly and indirectly, depending on the local needs in our community.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our fundraiser at the Macaroni Grill (8295 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758) on Tuesday, October 9th from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm. We were able to add some money to our coffers while enjoying some tasty food from Macaroni Grill, one of our Martinis & Merriment past supporters.

Membership Committee

Leigh Nurre & Leslie Konopinski, Co-Chairs

The Membership committee thanks everyone who attended the pizza party on October 22, 2018. The goal was to strengthen connections between members, who kept up a running conversation with each other throughout the evening and got to know each other better. Of the 20 RSVPs, 6 were new members, which was especially rewarding for the committee.  Pizza, chicken wings, ice cream and adult beverages were served, and a 2-pound box of See’s Candies was shared by all. Everyone seemed to enjoy the games that we played. Thank you SIEG members for coming!

The Membership committee now begins the process of selecting our next club event. We are also starting the planning of an “Orientation” for new and seasoned members. Last but not least, we are in contact with potential new members. Please stand by for future news and information.

The next second Wednesday lunch date is to be at Plate’s Cafe at Depot Park; 14 Business Park Way # 149, Sacramento, CA.  95828 - (916) 381-2233.

Upcoming meeting locations & times:
  • Nov 13th @ 6:30 - Maryann's house
  • Dec 6th @ 6:30 - Leslie's house
SAVE THE DATE! The Holiday Party will be at Aviator on December 13, 2018.
The Membership Committee sponsored a club social for SIEG members on Monday, October 22, 2018, at 6:30 pm at Kim Williams's home!

SIA News
On October 16, 2018, SIA announced that we have a new President!

From the press release:

Elizabeth Di Geronimo is serving a one-year term as president of the Board of Directors for Soroptimist International of the Americas, Inc.® (SIA), a global volunteer organization of women who work to economically empower women and girls.

As volunteer president, Di Geronimo leads the board in future thinking and oversight of its finances, and strategy. As part of the organization’s long-term strategy, she will champion efforts to increase Soroptimist’s collective impact in helping women and girls around the world to lead better lives. SIA economically empowers women and girls through its Dream Programs, which provide access to education—the single most effective poverty intervention.

“Women and girls continue to carry the burdens of the world in unique ways. The help Soroptimist provides has the power to change someone's life—and the lives of their family members—toward a positive path,” stated Di Geronimo.

“Soroptimist means support and encouragement that are truly transformative. Our actions give a voice to women and girls, who otherwise would not be heard,” Di Geronimo added. “As president, I am honored to serve an organization with such an important and vital mission.”

Di Geronimo has also initiated a social media campaign, which asks members and clubs to use #SpotlightSoroptimist on the 25th of each month to increase recognition of SIA’s Dream Programs.

A member since 1998, Di Geronimo has held several leadership positions at all levels of the organization including region governor, and club president and treasurer.

Di Geronimo is a civil engineer. She serves on the board of directors of a medical and shopping center complex.
