Greetings from Portland to all our supporters!

The week we've been waiting for is here!  Your UMKR volunteers from around the globe are putting the final touches on our displays. We are preparing to share the situation in Palestine with thousands of delegates and observers, asking them to cut the church's financial ties with the occupation. We need your prayers for strength, wisdom, and grace. There are also three things you can do below. The Conference begins tomorrow, May 10th!

We are presenting four exciting events during the conference, including Palestinian and Jewish speakers, a film screening, a celebration with dabke dancing and more! We have translated all our materials into nine languages. Your donations have made these events and our displays possible. We are so grateful to you all.

We will give this our best effort, knowing that God has a purpose and plan, and we are trusting in His guidance. No matter what happens, we will acquaint more people with the realities faced by Palestinians and with the opportunity to make a difference through UMKR. Please keep us in prayer.

Yours in Christ,
The UMKR Team
Ways You Can Help
3 Things You Can Do

No matter where you are, here are 3 valuable and simple ways YOU can support all this action during GC 2016, in addition to prayers:

#1. Use our new hashtag:
#KairosGC2016

On Twitter: For those who tweet, use it yourself as much as possible.
On Facebook: Also use the hashtag in Facebook posts.
Please spread it around - tell everyone you can about it!

#2. Follow UMKR on Twitter:
@UMKairosResp

You can check everything we are tweeting from General Conference.

#3. Really important: Like UMKR on Facebook:
www.facebook.com/UnitedMethodistKairosResponse

After you "Like" us, see the drop down menu under the "Liked" button.
Click "Notifications."
Then you will know when we post something new during GC 2016.
You can always turn that off whenever you want!

We will have Facebook posts with current action and events at General Conference.
Like them,
Share them,
Comment on them!

The more activity Facebook sees on our posts, the more those show up in news feeds.

Thanks for all you do,
Legislation
What the Delegates Will Consider:

UMKR has four resolutions that call for divestment from or screening of companies involved in the occupation. There will be important debates and votes here on these and other resolutions concerning Israel/Palestine. There are other resolutions that are being put forth by people who do not support divestment and boycott.  We need your prayers to confront these.

Some proposals seek to undo progress the denomination has made on acting for justice. There is also a proposal to change the church's emphasis on "socially responsible investing" to "sustainable investing", a far different goal which we do not support.  We are working with delegates who are committed to justice on five legislative committees that will consider these measures.

UMKR Alliances
Valued partners
Building the movement with the help of our friends
UMKR could not succeed in its work for justice without the support and ideas of its partners within and beyond the church. We are grateful to have as co-sponsors for some of our events the Native American International Caucus, Japanese American Clergy Caucus, National Association of Filipino American United Methodists, and Washington Interfaith Alliance for Middle East Peace.

We have speakers from other supporting groups, including Jewish Voice for Peace and the Palestinian Christian Alliance for Peace.

Two of our resolutions were unanimously adopted by Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR), and will be among their legislative priorities. We are grateful for this tremendous support. We would also like to thank the UMC General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) for adopting two of our divestment resolutions for GC 2016, Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA) for bringing our resolutions to many annual conferences, and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) for all their support since our work began. We're pleased that Friends of Sabeel (FOSNA) has a booth at General Conference and that American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) will be represented there. No Way to Treat a Child Campaign has provided material for our booth.

We could not have reached this point without the help of a wonderful interfaith group in Portland, who have done everything from order buttons to organize schedules to install equipment. Their help and encouragement have been amazing. For more information, contact our UMKR Alliances Chair, Gloria Brown at gbrown3116@aol.com.
