Observing the Way You Walk
First starters, you can have fun with this and let it be silly!
Exaggerated movement is easier to notice than everyday movement, so get goofy if that helps you discover something while trying out the below suggestions. For that matter, inspire a friend to join you! Sometimes silliness is best when shared.
Then, exaggerated or not, you can try to analyze your movement:
Your foot strike
- what part of your foot seems to hit the ground first?
- what part of your foot seems to leave the ground last?
Your hip movement
- side to side swish?
- front to back swing?
Your lower back
- do you feel pressure on your lower back when your foot touches down?
You can notice your gait in relationship to what you're doing:
How does your gait change for different walking tasks?
- carrying objects?
- rushing to catch a train?
- texting on your mobile?
How does your gait change depending on who else is around?
- your close friends and family?
- your colleagues?
- someone you mean to impress?
To make your gait observation a daily thing, bring it in to a short walk you take every day, even if it's just to the mailbox.
