WATER QUALITY
WORKSHOP RECAP

On Tuesday, August 25, 2015, a Water Quality Workshop was held in order to share what the project team knows about water issues in the corridor, including Williamson Creek, flooding concerns and run off.  Attendees helped us identify additional issues and concerns as well as their priorities for the team regarding both water quality and water quantity. Over 40 members of the public attended.

HERE'S A QUICK RECAP OF SOME OF THE INPUT WE RECEIVED AT THE WORKSHOP:

Williamson Creek

  • Mimic the natural setting as much as possible when terracing Williamson Creek at key locations instead of using concrete
  • Have a program of long term maintenance of any terracing at Williamson Creek
  • Minimize any impact to the ecosystem of Williamson Creek as a result of the proposed project
  • Minimize any potential impact to trees and vegetation near Williamson Creek due to the proposed elevated structures, specifically due to shading from sunlight and stormwater quantity and quality
  • Plant additional trees and as many native plants as possible adjacent to Williamson Creek

Proposed Trailhead at Williamson Creek near William Cannon Drive

  • Continue plans for the proposed trailhead
  • Add additional trailheads where possible, specifically near McCarty/Joe Tanner or by HEB
  • Maintain wildlife crossings near trailheads
  • Maintain the trailhead, shared use path, and the creek itself

Water Quantity

  • Minimize any potential impact to downstream flooding, especially in Gaines Creek
  • Ensure that emergency vehicles can access and use entire proposed facility during a flood event
  • Design aesthetically pleasing and landscaped treatments for all water detention ponds; use as little concrete as possible in these areas
  • Make regional detention ponds available for community/recreational use, and perhaps involve private sector to help fund community amenities
  • Minimize any potential impact to trees due to changes in drainage as a result of the proposed project

Water QUALITY

  • Minimize any potential impact to Williamson Creek and other water features due to run off during the construction phase as well as run off from cars on the roadway and elevated structure if the project is built
  • Include water quality features at the section of Williamson Creek that would be located between proposed elevated structures, specifically features that treat storm water runoff before it reaches the creek
We also heard differing opinions about the proposed elevated structures (some were for, some were against), support for minimizing tree removal, and an interest in learning more about Alternatives A and C.

The presentations, exhibits, and handouts from the meeting are available on our Public Input site and soon we’ll have a meeting summary finalized.

TELL US MORE

The interactive discussion that followed each presentation at the workshop included questions for attendees, which are listed below. After reviewing the meeting materials available for download at the link above, let the project team know if you have additional thoughts on these items by clicking here to send us your input.

WILLIAMSON CREEK AND PROPOSED TRAILHEAD

  1. In regard to the Oak Hill Parkway project, do you have any issues or concerns regarding Williamson Creek?
  2. Do you have any suggestions for the project team regarding Williamson Creek?
  3. The project team is considering building a trailhead near Williamson Creek. Is that something the community would like?

 WATER QUANTITY AND WATER QUALITY

  1. Where have you seen flooding in the area?
  2. What suggestions do you have for water quality for the Oak Hill Parkway project?

YOU ARE SHAPING OAK HILL PARKWAY

Your input is critical to the success of the project and we are very grateful for your time with us! Check out our list of how your comments and questions have made a real impact on the project design.
