Resilience and Recovery on Lake Street

Dear <<First Name>>,

Last night was not an easy night for many of us, but after waking up to bad news for several mornings in a row, we were thankful to see no new building fires or major destruction this morning. Community members came together in amazing ways to protect each other and our businesses. It feels very special.

We know there is much to mourn and recover from. The number of businesses damaged by break-ins or fire after Friday night was staggering.

We are uncertain what the next few nights hold, but know that we are here and continuing to work for you. Please let us know how you’re doing and what you need.

Your Lake Street Council staff,
Allison, ZoeAna, Theresa, and Matt

Curfew extended
Minneapolis and St. Paul have extended their curfews through tonight, again beginning at 8pm and going until 6am tomorrow. The City of Minneapolis has published recommendations for business owners to protect your property and yourself, including recommending that you stay at home.

Securing your building:
We don’t know when it will feel safe and secure to re-open businesses again, but our guess is it will be a couple of days at least. We are coordinating supplies to continue helping businesses board-up and protect their buildings at our supply drop-off site at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (2730 E 31st St). Drop by anytime before 7pm and you will be able to find tools, supplies, plywood, and volunteers.

Beautifying your building:
We may have these boards up for a little while, and we’ve heard from many artists who want to contribute their labor towards putting supportive messages and art on them. Reply to this email if you would like help from an artist.

We Love Lake Street:
Donations keep coming in to support Lake Street businesses. Our We Love Lake Street campaign has now raised over $1.5 million. We are still focusing on spreading the word and bringing in the funds for the next few days, but soon after we will be soliciting your feedback about how we should prioritize funds and manage our grant-making process to get money into the hands of impacted businesses. Stay tuned and keep sharing the website.

Individual business fundraisers:
We’ve seen some businesses start their own fundraising campaigns using GoFundMe or other platforms, which we think is a great idea. Be alert: some scammers are taking advantage of people and running illegitimate campaigns, so if you make one, let people know through official channels that it is real. If you have a fundraising page for your business, please send it to us and we’ll spread the word.

If you have another need, please reply to this email and let us know. We are wishing you safety and community in this difficult time.
