Over/Under Newsletter - January 2021
The National Basketry Organization is an inclusive community of makers and enthusiasts whose purpose is to promote awareness, inspire creativity, and foster appreciation for the heritage and artistry of basketry.
What's New at NBO

Welcome to 2021 and our first Over/Under of this new year. I want to share a quote I saw yesterday after shortly after the Presidential Inauguration. “Amanda Gorman is why the arts are more than an elective. Artists. Are. Necessary. Art. Is. Necessary.” I am so pleased to be the Executive Director of a vibrant Non-profit Arts Organization. The arts constantly challenge us, inspire us and lift us up in trying times. Thank you for being reading this OU.

Every January NBO welcomes new Board Members. This year Charissa Brock, Eric Stark and Cael Chappell will be joining the board. They each bring wonderful talents and tremendous enthusiasm to serve on our Board of Directors. Over the next couple of months, we’ll introduce you to each one of them. Take a look below to learn more about Charissa Brock.

We’re here to help you get the word out about any events and exhibitions that you’re participating in along with any classes you’re teaching. Start here at how to add your events to the NBO Calendar. While you are there, check out other listings at the same time. In addition to being shown on our website calendar, these events are also pulled for publication in NBO's Basketry+ magazine. Be sure to let us know what you’re up to.

Our Teachers Zoom continues to meet the second Thursday of the month at 11 am Pacific time. There is always a lively discussion filled with interesting ideas and many creative people. We’ll be having another MarketPlace meeting in February. To join these groups email me at Pam Morton.

Feel free to share this with your friends.

Welcome to the NBO Board:

Charissa Brock

Charissa Brock is an artist working with bamboo, a giant grass that has been used for centuries to create baskets and other everyday objects. She integrates wood, glass, paper and thread as visual accents and structural components. Her abstract sculptures are crafted using basketry, woodworking, and fiber art techniques. Brock’s early art education began under the tutelage of her mother, Emily Brock, an internationally recognized glass artist. Later, she earned a BFA in Glass from Center For Creative Studies, College of Art and Design. After college, Charissa studied basketry with individual teachers before earning an MFA in Fibers at Tyler School of Art/Temple University in 2000. In addition to her studio practice, she has taught workshops across the USA in places like Haystack and Arrowmont. In 2017 she had an opportunity to travel to Japan to meet bamboo artists during the filming of a tv show. Her artwork is in private collections worldwide as well as Arizona State University Museum, the Rivermark Hotel, the Hyatt Regency Maui, The Hyatt Grand Cypress, and the Ritz-Carlton. Her work was featured in an article in the Dec/Jan 2019 issue of American Craft Magazine.
