Over/Under Newsletter - December 2021
The National Basketry Organization is an inclusive community of makers and enthusiasts whose purpose is to promote awareness, inspire creativity, and foster appreciation for the heritage and artistry of basketry.
What's New at NBO
Another year is winding down as we approach the Winter Solstice next week. What a year it’s been for each of us. NBO has found many ways to increase our outreach to our members and the larger basketry community. We chose to look for opportunities as time moved along while staying true to our mission.
I have been with NBO for just over six years. During that time, I’ve had the pleasure to work and partner with two Board Presidents. Emily Dvorin brought me to NBO and helped educate me to the culture of our organization. We worked together for two and a half years. Setting many organizational plans in place. Four years ago, Carol Eckert became the Board President. We expected it would be a two-year term. Carol and I became leadership partners managing the organization. We met almost weekly. Then life happened and Carol is finally leaving her role as President on December 31, 2021.

Carol has been a true gift to NBO and to me. We worked tirelessly for four years through everything that has been thrown at us. During these years we’ve become more than a team  - we’ve become friends. Our partnership is one built on trust, always with a view of what is best for NBO now and in the future. I can’t imagine working with a more thoughtful collaborative person than Carol. I’m so glad that she’s not leaving us. She will remain on the board continuing to help guide NBO with a steady hand. I am so grateful to have worked with such a truly lovely person. Thank you, Carol, for everything you have done for us.
Please remember to visit the NBO Every 1 exhibit. It will come down from its online existence on December 31.
If you’re reading this and you are not a member now is a wonderful time to join NBO. We are an active, vibrant community of basket makers and would love to have you be a part of NBO!
I wish you Happy Holidays however you choose to celebrate this time of year!

From the Desk of the President

This is my final month as NBO President. We have faced challenges over these last four years, but there have also been joys as we’ve worked to support the basketry community. Guiding NBO is a team effort, and our amazing board and staff make it all possible — with lots of hard work and plenty of laughter. As I pass the leadership of our organization into the capable hands of Annetta Kraayeveld, I’m thankful for the friends I’ve made and the many things I’ve learned during my term. NBO has enriched my life in so many ways.

- Carol Eckert
