What's New at NBO

I've recently returned from a road trip to visit several National Parks. I saw a phenomenal amount of wildlife including herds of bison and mountain vistas with golden Aspen trees in all their fall glory. My time, separated from everyday life, proved to be just what I needed. It gave me the time to think, regroup and acquire some much-needed perspective. I’m happy to be back to work at NBO with my eyes wide open during a beautiful Autumn 2021.

We’re introducing a new semi-annual zoom gathering, the Lunch Basket. It’s a time to show and talk about your work with others hosted by NBO Board Member Chrissa Brock. Our first Lunch Basket will take place on Thursday, November 18th at 11 am Pacific Time. Email NBO Lunch Basket for a link to sign up for this new, free event.

There’s a nice piece below by Anne Bowers. She recently traveled to the Missouri Basketweavers Guild’s annual event and shares her experience and impressions with us.
NBO’s Every 1 Exhibition continues to be available for viewing on our website if you have not seen it yet. There are 161 NBO Members’ pieces included in the exhibit. Take a look to see the breadth of their work.

Please make sure to use the hashtag #NBOMember when you post anything on Facebook and Instagram. We want to help you share your work. NBO will link to your post and other members will be more likely to see them.
Have a wonderful autumn.

Weaving on the Road
By Anne Bowers

(Cue music…) “On the road again, I just can’t wait to get on the road again…” Lately, that tune by Willie Nelson is what I’m humming to myself as I drive down our laneway and head off on another adventure in my chosen career of teaching basketry skills. Since August, I’ve been out traveling to various venues that are hosting basketry get togethers. There has been much anticipation mixed with trepidation at every event I’ve attended, though. The first convention I attended was the Missouri Basketry Guild’s annual event. Although they were unable to hold an event in 2019 and 2020 due to Covid, they planned and hoped to make this year’s event happen. And it was a success! Here is a quote from Leanne Neilsen, Co-chair of the convention: "Well, after two long years of cancellations and planning, MBG actually pulled off the first in-person basket weaving convention since February 2020!!! It was a long and winding road, full of many uncertainties, back up plans, special considerations including sanitization, minimizing gathering points, working with restrictions until 4 months before convention, ever changing procedures and more.”

One of the best things about a basket convention is catching up with old friends. Paula Harrison and Marilyn Moore sit together after the Marketplace in Independence, Missouri.

This convention and the others that I have attended since that time in Kentucky, and Pennsylvania also took precautions such as social distancing, hand sanitizer on every table, and requests to wear masks were also implemented. Each place that I went to teach was ready to follow their state and county mandates. The love and need that basket weaving plays in the life of every individual that I saw, as well as the need for being together and enjoying one another’s company was evident. The world that we all revolve in, this love of the woven form obviously is strong and will continue far past this pandemic.
As waves of illness continue, and as we start to experience lightening restrictions with an eye to the future, let’s not give up hope. In a sad way, our world has become smaller because of more awareness of the effects of the pandemic. But it has also become smaller because of improved communications. Hopefully, this time has given us an opportunity to clarify where we fit into this world of basketry. Let’s use this past time of confinement to become more determined to make the most of the joy, pleasure the relationships formed and the art involved in this world we so enjoy…the world of basketry.
