Let's catch up, we have lots of news and events coming up to tell you about. But first...

This is not the End:
Umbrella Annual Exhibition & Art Prize

One exhibition each year is for our Members to participate and display their artwork. This year the exhibition is not the last for 2018, therefore the theme for the members’ show asks members to be inspired by concepts of beginnings, endings and the in-between or any other interpretations of the phrase “This is not the end”.  The exhibition also has a $1,000 non-acquisitive art prize generously sponsored by Sister City Partners.

Exhibition Duration: 28 September – 4 November 2018

It has been an incredibly busy first few months for me here at Umbrella, and everyone has been so welcoming. I am thrilled to accept the position of Director on a permanent basis and look forward to continuing to work closely with Jonathan as he does great things as Creative Director of Townsville City Council Galleries. I feel honoured to be able to contribute to the future of the dynamic 32 year old ‘institution’ of Townsville that is Umbrella Studio. My aim is to listen to the needs of our members and our community, to ensure that Umbrella continues to be a relevant and vibrant hub for creativity in Townsville.

Over the past month highlights have included a visit from nationally esteemed curator and former Queensland College of Art lecturer Pat Hoffie. We spent a day together discussing a range of projects, and in particular an upcoming Umbrella exhibition for 2019 called the Partnershipping Project. We will be one of four galleries around Australia exhibiting and partnering on this project which innovates the traditional curatorial model by having new works created in each location, having collaboration at its heart and inviting artists to create works that focus on a connection to ‘place’. It was a pleasure to do studio visits and to gather the six artists together that will create works for the Townsville edition of this exhibition – including Rob Douma, Anne Lord, Gail Mabo, Obery Sambo, Brian Robinson and Anthony Vue.

This focus on showcasing regional voices through art practice is also the central theme of our current major exhibition displayed in the main part of Umbrella gallery called spaced2: future recall. This is one of two high caliber externally curated exhibitions per year that we are able to bring to Townsville through the support of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, and the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments. We were lucky enough to have Soula Veyradier, Program Manager for International Art Space (who curated this exhibition), visit us on Sunday to deliver a floor talk. Soula also facilitated a panel discussion about the topic of ‘place’ in arts practice with local artist panelists Tony Fitzsimmons, Anne Lord and Anneke Silver. We had a great turn out with nearly 30 people present for this lively discussion. I look forward to us holding more talks like this in the future.

It has been wonderful getting to meet so many of our members who have popped into the gallery lately, and I look forward to meeting more of you at the Members show!

Until then, happy making!

Kellie

Thank You! New Lighting Upgrade

We sincerely thank the donors and also the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland who helped us achieve our new LED lighting upgrade that took place this week! This allows us to become more energy efficient and save us money down the track in electricity expenses. It also will improve the viewing of the artworks on display. Here are our electrical contractors from Lollo and Allan hard at work!

New Director Appointment

Umbrella welcomes Kellie Williams as our new permanent Director after acting in the role for the past three months. Kellie comes to the gallery with a wealth of knowledge in the arts sector, and experience in governance and the not-for-profit sector. Previously Company Manager at Dancenorth, and Fund Manager at Art Queensland, Kellie understands the intrinsic value of arts and culture to a community. Like all our staff, Kellie has a visual arts practice herself. We look forward to seeing Umbrella grow under the new Director. We sincerely thank Jonathan for his incredible work in shaping the Umbrella that we know and love today. Jonathan has taken up a new opportunity as Creative Director for Townsville City Council Galleries, and will continue to have a close relationship with Umbrella Studio going forward. Congratulations to both Kellie and Jonathan!

We are very excited to have Barbie visit and use our studio and hold an artist talk and a masterclass workshop for our local artists.
