Welcome to our February newsletter
Waterfalls and Coastal Landscapes of South Wales - June 4th and 5th
"I cannot call to mind a single valley that in the same extent of country comprises so much beautiful and picturesque scenery and so many interesting and special features as the Vale of Neath”. That’s what the famous 19th Century naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace wrote when he first experienced this exquisite area. He summed it up pretty well. The ‘special features’ he refers being a the series of beautiful and dramatic waterfalls blessing this valley.
On this two day workshop, which takes in 'Waterfall Country' as it is known, we will explore the beautiful wooded valleys on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the tumbling streams and falls to be found within. We will also spend a day at the Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast. Awarded Heritage Coast status in 1972, this 14-mile length of relatively unknown coastline features a spectacular mix of dramatic rugged cliffs, unique rock formations and breathtaking views making it a must for the photographer. You can find out more details here and download our guide to photographing waterfalls here (PDF).
***New workshop - Hidcote Gardens - Summer colours***
This year we have teamed up with the National Trust to offer two summer workshops at the lovely gardens of Hidcote, nestled in the Cotswolds. A stunning display of colour and design, Hidcote is one of Britains best known and most influential ‘arts and crafts gardens’ with its linked rooms of hedges, rare trees, shrubs and herbaceous borders. The various characters and and themes make it a delight for the photographer.
Our workshops take place on June 16th and 30th commencing at 7:30am and running through until 1pm, which allows us to make the most of the favourable early morning light and also have the garden to ourselves for quite some time before it opens to the public. More details can be found on our website.
The Essence of Tuscany - May 20th - 26th
Tuscany has long been a favoured destination for artists and photographers, and with good reason. A landscape characterised by undulating hills, charming hilltop medieval towns and villages, sweeping vineyards and elegant cypress trees, it cannot fail to captivate.
Last years autumn workshop was a great success but you don’t need to just take my word for it; one of our clients, John Pidgeon, who attended along with fellow colleagues from the Roehampton Camera Club, wrote an account of our trip which can be viewed here (PDF). You can also view some of the images made by participants on our Flickr page.
This year, our five day six night workshop takes place in May, in order to take advantage of the abundance of wild flowers that are typically found in the area. It promises to be an unforgettable experience. To find out more, please visit our website.
Yorkshire Coastal Treasures - April 9th - 12th
We are back on the North Yorkshire coast in April for another workshop, which both Andy and I are really looking forward to. An area of great coastal scenery, and offering plenty of photographic opportunities, this three day workshop takes in the very best that North Yorkshire has to offer. From tiny fishing villages and the traditional seaside resort of Whitby with the imposing ruins of its ancient abbey and traditional harbour, to the fabulous rock formations to be found at Saltwick bay and nearby Robin Hoods Bay, there is plenty to discover and some great images to be found. More information is available here.
Northumberland Castles and Coast - March 26th - 29th - two places left!
The light at this time of year can be outstanding on the Northumberland coast. This coupled with its outstanding geological features, sweeping sandy beaches fringed with sand dunes and dramatic castles make it one of the most popular locations in the UK for landscape photography. We have two places left on our workshop next month so if this is somewhere you have been longing to visit but not yet made it, nows your chance! This is a great workshop for those interested in working with filters, particularly with long exposures and perfecting your composition. More details can be found here.
Lightroom - beginners and advanced one day workshops
As well as being one of the most popular post-production software packages, Lightroom is also the ideal photo management and workflow tool. However like anything at first, it takes a bit of getting used to. The first of our beginners workshops, which is aimed at those new to Lightroom, commences on March 8th. The ideal introduction, this is a hands on workshop which will help you get to grips with the basics of organising and post processing your images.
We are also now offering Advanced one day workshops for those of you who want to expand your post processing knowledge and get more out of Lightroom. For all the information on what is covered in each workshop, and forthcoming dates, please refer to our website.
