Meet an editor, read a guide to not reading and more!

Hi, Katie,

I "discovered" you when I was on the faculty of the NESCBWI conference.

So, when I was searching for a good podcast about the children's writing field, I checked
out your Brain Burps. So far, I've listened to the ones with Bruce Coville, Nancy Werlin
and Rebecca Stead and Linda Sue Park.

What a great podcast!

Thanks for all the hard work you do to create them. I look forward to listening to the rest of them . . .
in the car, on the treadmill, while walking the pooches, etc.

All best,
Donna Gephart

This Book Bites!

Written by Leslie Muir Illustrated by Jen Corace

This is such a cute picture book! I think it'll work way past Halloween too, which is good, since that was so yesterday. (HA)
The little vampire in this book just lost his baby teeth and is very excited about his first bite, but can't seem to find his prey.
Until he realizes that only babies bite...what will he eat then? Read it and find out!

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs is a Feast

Middle grade novel by Anne Ursu, illustrations by Erin Mcguire

This is a modern fairy tale, and just as harrowing - and satisfying - as the ones of olde. Ten-year-old Hazel sets off into the dead-of-winter woods to save her best friend, Jack. The telling of her journey, what she learns about herself and the world is told in such a beautiful, lyrical way I had to stop and smack my husband a couple of times and say, "Listen to this sentence!" He got very sick of it. I, on the other hand, was very sad when it ended because I loved living in that world, recognizing the literary references, and rooting for both Hazel and Jack.

Creepy Monsters

For Your Little Monsters

Written by Jane Yolen and Kelly Murphy

No, I'm not talking to you Lady Gaga. Though (oh man, do I dare say it...yes, I do...) you will go gaga over this book. I must now slink into my monster cave to read this book and hang my head in shame over that line. But you will love this book - and so will your kids.

Not this Month on TV!

The dang blizzard bumped me! No video this month but here are the books I would've taken on! Happy Halloween! (And as a side note - they CANCELED Halloween in my town! Too many downed trees and wires. Guess my kids get all that candy I bought!)
SLJ Trailee Awards

Please Vote!

This year I am beyond honored to have two of my book videos (trailers) as finalists in the School Library Journal's Trailee Awards! You can click here to watch the nominees and then scroll to the bottom to vote. I feel flushed with blessings that they were both included but you know what that means, right? They could split the vote! If I'm lucky enough that you are trying to choose between my two, then I ask that you vote for Little Chicken's Big Day...only if you just can't decide!

Picture Book Month

November is Picture Book Month!

Helmed by storyteller & author Dianne de Las Casas, a bunch of picture book writers and illustrators, (including me) created a celebration of picture books in response to the hooey (yes, I said hooey) that the NY Times started with that goofy article that picture books were dead. We got a great write up in Publisher's Weekly here. And we were covered here in School Library Journal, too!

"What is Picture Book Month?" you ask. It is an international initiative to designate November as Picture Book Month, encouraging grown-ups to read picture books with children. Founder Dianne de Las Casas, and Co-Founders, Wendy Martin,  Elizabeth O. Dulemba (author/illustrator), Tara Lazar (author) and I are putting it all together.

The website includes:
A Picture Book Hero featured every day
A themed calendar
Picture Book Links and Resources
Links to picture book publishers
Links to picture book authors/illustrators
Links to picture book blogs/review sites
Picture Book Activities

There's nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book.

Each day in November 2011, we are highlighting a Picture Book Hero at this site. Stop by and leave a message in the comments and let us know why picture books are important to you!
