Aurora Farms
|
|
Aurora Farm took root in 2004 at its current home on the last Red River Métis Seigneurial or River Lot in St. Norbert. Aurora Farm is based on permaculture, Indigenous and feminist approaches to the human connection to land as a model sustainable educational farm designed and operated by activist Louise May and a team of diverse and talented farm workers.
Over the past 18 years, a number of our sustainability benchmarks have been achieved. The 160 acre monoculture conventional agriculture land has been transformed to grass hay crop mimicking the prairie grassland ecosystem with over 200 naturalized species of plants, trees, bushes and medicinal herbs now found here. Several acres of intensive food and medicinal herb production gardens are farmed without chemicals and with soil building practices. Several breeding herds of heritage livestock including dairy goats, chickens, alpacas, horses including the critically endangered Ojibway or Lac La Croix ponies.
Aurora Farm is a value-added agri-industrial manufacturer of goat milk soap and other natural care products with high community visibility and engagement through collaborations, traditional media, social media, workshops, tours and events.
Many aspects of original design have been completed including wetland rehabilitation, fully solar powered, large-scale composting, complete rainwater collection system, 2 dugouts, land drainage and over 2,000 trees planted.
Recently, Aurora Farm announced a new venture starting up an urban farm located in the heart of the City of Winnipeg focussed on food security and community engagement. This farm will contain a year-round vertical hydroponic growing system for greens, vegetables and herbs, a commercial kitchen to allow for the expansion of food products and a centralized distribution centre for Aurora Farm products.
As a Signatory of the BizforClimate Climate Action Pledge, Aurora Farm hopes to share success stories and encourage other businesses to take as many steps as possible to become more aligned with the health and beauty of our natural ecosystem. Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you to our sponsor Relish
Relish has redesigned our website and rebranded BizforClimate!
Relish New Brand Experience is a Winnipeg-based integrated agency using marketing, design and technology, helping everyone from start-ups to big corporations. They started on the path to B Corp certification in 2017. It was also at this time that they considered their environmental footprint. They have since done everything from supporting active transportation to a Green Audit Session with Manitoba’s Green Action Centre.
In addition, Relish announced the creation of a Change in the Making Climate Action Grant in 2022. This is a national grant to support climate action projects. Relish help organizations by covering a minimum $10,000 in labour costs to help them elevate their brand, communications and technology.
“The team at BizforClimate really make you feel like you’re part of something bigger, more influential,” says Relish managing director Suzanne Braun, “and that your being consistent with a green mindset will truly have positive, long-term results. We hope, through our collective efforts, that this will encourage other businesses to start, as we did, with the small things. Then, continually try to improve and connect with other businesses and initiatives for ideas.”

Green Economy Canada is excited to announce that our second round of funding for the $1.9M EV Charger Incentive Program is now open for 2023 applications. Canadian for-profit and not-for-profit organizations can get 50% back for installing EV charging stations up to $100,000.
Why Install An EV Charging Station?
- Generate revenue - Charging stations can increase your property value and allow you to generate money through service fees. They can also encourage customers to visit your location and stay longer to purchase goods and services while waiting for their vehicle to charge.
- Raise your public profile - EV chargers provide a visible symbol of your interest and commitment to sustainability. They also put you on the map (literally) when people search for EV charging locations.
- Reduce carbon emissions - 25% of Canada’s GHG emissions come from transportation. EV chargers help reduce those emissions by supporting EV adoption among your customers, your employees, and in your own fleet.
- Get ahead of the curve - The federal government has mandated that all light-duty vehicles sold in Canada will be zero emission vehicles by 2035. Installing charging stations will prepare your business for the future and position it to reap the benefits from a growing public demand for EV charging locations.
- Accelerate Canada’s low-carbon transition - One of the biggest barriers to the widespread adoption of EVs is the lack of access to charging stations. By installing an EV charger, you’ll help accelerate action on climate change by making EV adoption more accessible.
