Missional Opportunities along the Trail of COVID-19

by Amy Schenkel
The trail is the thing, not the end of the trail. Travel too fast, and you miss all you are traveling for. — Louis L'Amour

Lately, there have been a lot of mornings when I sit down at my makeshift plywood desk in our spare bedroom and feel like the 7-year-old whining in the back seat of his parent's minivan: "How much longer? Are we there yet?" I want to get back to my visiting, fellowshipping, and banqueting life.

But, the journey continues. Louis L'Amour's quote reframes my perspective: What is God doing in me, in our church, and our community along the trail? What unique missional opportunities do we see as we progress? What if we desire the end of this trail so profoundly that we miss our reason for traveling?

The congregations our Resonate Great Lakes Team works with are already making plans for re-gathering once we arrive at the close of this journey. We all are eager for the end of this trail.

Meanwhile, let us not miss what God might have us traveling for along the way. As you make plans to phase in the re-gathering of the church, consider some practices that help you live into God's missional call:

Phase: Households Joining in Worship

Have you, or your congregants, found that worship at home allows for vulnerable, real spiritual conversations and fellowship in a way that is limited in the formal worship setting? READ MORE

Invitation to a Year of Mission and Justice

Right now we are likely confined to our houses and our video calls, but I can't wait for September 2020 and the start of our next 10-month Detroit Cohort.
Who is the young adult that you should be sharing this with?

I'm sharing this with you because I know you serve closely with young adults, and I need your help to get the word out. Would you send me the names of 1-2 young adults who might be interested in applying to Cohort Detroit? We are looking for students who will:
  • Love Jesus, justice, and mission in a way that honors marginalized voices
  • Learn about ministry, socio-economic justice, and community development alongside a Diverse Cohort of young adults
  • Relocate to live in Detroit neighborhoods and support our neighbors as we heal from the effects of COVID-19
  • Gain hands-on practice in urban ministry with some of the most thoughtful non-profits and churches in Detroit, like Grace in Action & CDC
Check out the bios for two of our current local participants, Josh Cook and KJ Pearson. While I know we make plans during these times cautiously, I extend this invitation to a conversation with young adults as they discern their next faithful steps.
