Summer Youth Programming with a Mission

by Amy Schenkel

A couple of summers ago, I had the privilege of visiting a rural church in Northern Michigan during their Vacation Bible School week. Every summer, this church welcomes about 20 children who walk across the street from the daycare center for five mornings of singing, play, prayer, and story-telling. During snack time, I sat next to one little girl, about five years old in pigtails. As we ate our animal crackers, she told me that she hadn’t seen her daddy in a while because he left and never came back. She said it so matter-of-factly, but also with the weight of sadness that revealed the brokenness in her heart and her home.

Studies show that this little girl will probably never be inside of a church building at any other point during the entire year, and likely not in her whole lifetime. Because a growing number of adults in America today are post-Christian, they are not likely to take their children to church. A 2010 Barna study revealed that only 5% of parents said that having children helped them become active in a church for the first time. Consequently, the younger the generation, the more post-Christian it is today.

Vacation Bible Schools, Summer Camps, and Backyard Bible Clubs can all be great ways to share the love of Jesus with the younger generation. As you begin planning for your summer youth programming, consider these three questions: Read More

Celebrate our newest Church Plant

Iglesia Todas Las Naciones
Celebrate with us the latest Church plant in the Great Lakes Region: Iglesia Todas Las Naciones. This Hispanic church plant, speaking Spanish, is parented by Beaverdam CRC and pastored by Pablo Lee and will be meeting at Immanuel CRC in Hudsonville.   In the Greater Grand Rapids area, there are over 10,000 Hispanics, and many of them do not know Christ. We pray that the Spirit will work through this partnership to reach the Hudsonville Community with the love and grace of Jesus Christ!

Glocal Postponement Notice

Sometime in the past few weeks, you may have received an invitation to the upcoming Glocal Mission Summit, scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Grand Rapids, MI.  Resonate values this gathering of missional leaders as a place where we can learn together about what others are doing to live into God’s mission and to imagine innovative ways to engage and embrace our local communities that are becoming increasingly diverse and global.
This gathering includes leaders from across North America, including some places that are now considered hotspots for COVID-19.  Experts expect that coronavirus cases will worsen and spread. The fear and anxiety of this virus are also genuine in our communities.  Therefore, after much prayer and discernment, we have reluctantly decided to POSTPONE the Glocal Mission Summit.  We believe that this is the best decision to protect the health of travelers, speakers, our host church, and the families of all those involved.
Please mark the new dates for Glocal on your calendar now: November 19-21, 2020, at inSpirit Church (Byron Center, MI).  Our theme, “Every One A Sent One,” will include conversations about prayer and the Holy Spirit, encouraging youth and lay leaders, and working with the Diaspora in our communities.  You won’t want to miss the inspirational dialogue you’ll find here with missional leaders like yourself.
Meanwhile, if you are in West Michigan, we invite you to consider participating in a Prayer Tour of missional ministries that partner with Resonate, which will still take place on Thursday, April 30, from 8:30 am-4:30 pm.  We will gather at the CRCNA Headquarters to pray for our denomination before boarding a charter bus that will take us to 6 ministry locations, where we will hear about these ministries and spend time in prayer for them.  Lunch is included in the registration fee (only $20!), and the registration is limited to 50 people.  Register today
We are praying for the places that are affected by this virus, and for the health care professionals, as they deal with the added stress and workload it brings.  We are also praying for the church in these unsettling times, that they may be bearers of shalom in their communities.  May God bring healing and peace.

Resonate hosts an annual mission summit called Glocal each year, and this year the conference will be right here in Grand Rapids. We are using John 20:19-23 as our Scripture theme, and we will emphasize Jesus’ anointing of us as Sent Ones, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.
While the summit has been postponed to November, we would like to invite people to join us in living out this calling by participating in a Prayer Tour of West Michigan ministries that partner with Resonate on Thursday, April 30. The Great Lakes Region has rented a charter bus, and we will travel to various ministry sites throughout the day. Register HERE
The cost is $20, which includes the bus and lunch. Cash or check received on the day of the event. Please make out checks to Resonate Global Mission
