Practical Advent Ideas to be the Light of Christ

by Amy Schenkel

One of the verses that give me great hope during the Advent season is John 1:5.

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (ESV)."

Many people in our churches and communities understand the darkness, especially this year.  The darkness has been so heavy that, at times, it has felt suffocating.  In the midst of this, everybody is longing for what the Light of Christ brings: hope, love, joy, and peace. This is an opportunity for the followers of Jesus to share the Light with our neighbors!

Yet, as I’ve spoken with churches about their outreach plans for the upcoming Advent season, many feel like our current circumstances have greatly limited our ability to think about missional opportunities this year.  Many feel like their creative juices have dried up because we’ve had to adapt in so many new ways already over the past few months.

What are some practical ways that the church can share the Light with their neighbors this year?  Read More

Resource Spotlight

What do we do about Christmas? Christine Sine shares how her small faith community (aka. Microchurch or missional community) will lean towards the light this holiday season.

Church planters and campus ministers shine God’s light into the far corners of communities and universities.  This year's work has become even more challenging, as they minister to people with increasing physical, relational, mental, and spiritual needs.  At the same time, these local ministries have been stretched thin to meet their community’s needs.

We encourage your congregation to adopt a local missionary this holiday season. Contact one of these church planters or campus ministers, learn about their work and ask how you can pray for them.  Ask them if you can bless them by meeting any of their tangible needs this Advent season.

Great Lakes Church Planters and Friends

The Hebrew word used for freshwater in this passage is RAVAH.  This year as we plan our RAVAH church planter gatherings, we will especially be focused on what will refresh and revive you, on how God can use our time together to restore you.  We will be inviting guests to join us who can help us with self-care, with stress management, with watering our roots that are deep in Christ.

On November 11, from 8:30-10 am, we will be meeting with Irene Kraegel author of The Mindful Christian
