Fun with Cameras
July meeting is Thursday the 18th from 7-8:30 pm in the Community Room of the Lyndon House.
The guest speaker will be Tim Rogan. Tim graduated from UGA with a degree in graphic design which helps explain why he is drawn to patterns, shadows, and blurs in his photography. He has worked for the Banner-Herald, Rhone Merieux/Merial, and currently owns Tim Rogan Design doing commercial photography and print graphic design. Tim has posted 25 galleries to the OnlineAthens Spotted feature and looks for the odd things others aren't shooting. For example, at the 2012 AthFest he spent the three days photographing the photographers. If he saw you taking a picture with anything, then he got a picture of you.
Tim's topic will be Fun With Cameras: Exploring creativity by breaking the rules. Opposite of what books tell you about keeping your camera still and unobstructed, Tim will show how putting your camera in motion or putting objects in front of your lens can often lead to the most exciting photos. This is a fun demonstration that will stretch you into exploring new ways of using your camera whether you use a point and shoot or the newest dSLR.
  • Creative Challenge is Simplicity. How much can you NOT show in your photo and still have it be artistic, creative, and/or memorable. Here is a link to get you inspired: Participation is always optional: you're always welcome to just come and see what others are showing. If you're participating, you can bring your photos on a flash drive, or you can email them before noon the day of the meeting to If you're bringing them to the meeting, please try to arrive by 6:45 so that we can get everybody's pictures loaded and start the meeting on time. We are using a new projector so these images are looking great.
  • FIELD TRIP to William Harris Homestead on July 20th. They are open from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. A late start for photography, but we could shoot the outside first then the log cabin last. Outdoors there will be a cellar, graveyard, smoke house, barn, and a short walk to a water spring to shoot; indoors is the log cabin. The cost is $6 for adults, and senior citizens is $5. They would be interested in any photos you cared to share with them. We could meet at the site at 9:45 in the parking lot.  I have to go in the cabin and check in and everyone would need to pay their fee.

  • Request for Help: Grace Staniszewski with Fowler Drive Elementary School is requesting help for an SEM (Schoolwide Enrichment Model) photography cluster group. SEM's purpose is to provide creative enrichment and community exposure, as well as fostering critical thinking skills to their students. This photography cluster will have 12-15 third to fifth grade students and will meet starting in late August from 1:00-2:15 on Wednesdays. Grace states that she isn't a photographer by trade so she is looking for a lot of help. I believe the goal is to work toward teaching them in a way that they can produce a visible end product that would help the community. Grace can be reached by email: If you contact her please state that you are with the Athens Photography Guild.
